Thinking About a Switch from 20"s to 18"s

I have 20" Rinspeed wheels on my car. They were on it when I bought it. I love the way they look and they performed very well on during first track day a couple of weeks ago. I have some fresh rear tires that I will be putting on soon. It looks like I'll get about 10k out of the rears (Nitto Invo 345/25 20), and probably twice that on the fronts.

I am thinking about changing to 18" wheels for a number of reasons.
1. Ease of getting replacements: I shudder to think about getting replacements for these tires if I have a sidewall puncture far from home.
2. Ride quality: I haven't hurt these wheels yet and the roads I drive on are terrible! The ride is "firm" and I wouldn't mind if it was less so.
3. Lots of choices for 18" tires.
4. Cost: This is the least of my concerns but still is a consideration.

So my questions are, how will my ride change? I have tremendous grip now, will that suffer a lot with a smaller contact patch? My wheels fill up the wheel wells beautifully without any lowering. Will I hate how it looks with the 18's?

I would appreciate any comments.

With 18" there should be additional side to side motion than with 19"s

About a month ago, there were several photos posted with 18" tires on a 997.1 turbo. A lot of rubber for now-a-day's look. Turbo was designed with 19" in mind. And the ride with 19"s is fine because supposedly suspension components were designed with 19"s in mind. Also I would think with 18s there would be more side to side motion than with 19s in sharp turns..

Correction

Number 2 on my list should be weight reduction. I will try to weigh the set up that I have now.

it's true about finding 18's out in the boonies... i had to wait overnight for a 19 rear replacement for my C2 in northern California, the tire shop guy tried to tell me i'd be better off replacing them with 18's.

Getting a set of 18"s to use as daily or track wheels is actually a great idea. The Rinspeeds are beautiful wheels and I'd hate to see them damaged!

I think a set of Forgestars would be a great choice to use as track or daily wheels!
They are stronger and lighter than any other wheel you can get at the same price range.
Plus they look great and are available in a wide variety of colors and sizes.

Ride quality should not be any worse than on your Rinnspeed, if anything, going from 20s to 18s will improve ride quality because you can run meatier tires.
On top of all that, the smaller, lighter wheels will decrease unsprung weight and you will get a notable increase in power.

I'd love to help you out and answer any questions you may have. Give me a call at 714.582.3330x8000.

Ron

If you want some 18s (good choice btw...) these are the lightest that I sell (17-19) and use on my GT3:

And a few snaps:

I have a couple on display as well if you want to see them in person etc..

The car is designed for 19s, I would go with 19s.

I use 19"s but in reality the 18"s are the pick for track particularly light ones. Just find a style you can live with and keep the 20"s for street else get some light 19"s and use them for both. 20"s on the track = yikes.

I used 18's on the track, but they really do look like they have huge sidewalls now that we are so used to seeing 19's and 20's as common wheel sizes.

some of the cheap lightweight wheels that work well for track on our cars - 996tt hollow spokes (<$1000), Porsche 997 C4 Carrera III wheels ($<1600), OZ Alleggeritta wheels (~$1700)

I've never tracked a car but I can't see going to 18's for any reason. The sidewalls would be too thick. If you got low profile on 18 it would look small and would be defeating the purpose of downsizing.
I'd say go to 19's. That way you keep the good look of low profile tire but can do a little thicker sidewall than those 20's.

I have 19's on my wife's car and I enjoy driving her car more than I do mine with 20's. 19's seem perfect for handling and looks.

Almost all the motorsports cars run on 18" slicks. The sidewalls are considered an integral part of the suspension tuning

I am also considering downsizing from the 20's that came on my car. I get a lot of compliments but the style of wheel is just not exactly me. Too showy. I'm pretty sure I'm going to go with lightweight 19's.
