Octane boosters, anyone who uses them ???
Octane boosters, anyone who uses them ???
I was searching around for alternatives to race fuel, in my case I spray straight methanol which really works, the problem is I am really really scared of it
. Every time I read about Methanol I say to my self, you must stop using this thing before You get into big trouble.
So I came across a few products that advertise to be safe to use, cheap, and transform pump fuel to race fuel (almost)
Some of the most famous ones are - Toluene
- Torco
- Xylene
I have not heard of any negative effects on the engine.
Anyone who have used them or have something to add, please post.
Thx

To increase 40L 91 octane gas to 102 octane you need 40L toluene, but you only need 1L torco unleaded accelerator for the same increase.
1L torco much more simple to carry around than 40L toluene

I ran Torco in my car a few years ago on the race program and had no troubles. I'm not sure of any long term effect on CATs??? I also ran a 20L drum of toulene in my suburban (12 psi boost, no inter-cooler) with the H2O/meth disabled, and it ran well too.

I've been using Torco for the last 2 years ~ 2500 miles (yeah, yeah garage queen). It was recommended to me by Tym Switzer based on the tune I had done through him. We were bleeding boost and it was felt that we weren't getting enough octane from pump 93. So it came down to either sending the ECU back to dial back the tune or go with Torco.

They will do more than just foul your plugs. I would be careful with Torco. It contains MMT, a manganese compound that acts as an antiknock agent similarly to lead. Over time, with heavy consumption, you will get maganese build-up on everything, including O2 sensors, cats, etc... just like lead. If you had engine failure because your O2 sensors are fouled up it would be very easy to detect manganese upon careful inspection. That would most certainly void any warranty claims.
