The bane of my existence...the CEL

Nothing like picking up your car from the dealer for the 3rd CEL that's come on in 2 months of ownership (first one I turned off by disconnecting the battery, 2nd one was documented by the dealer but turned off by itself and now this), where they can't find anything wrong with the car and any explanation for the CEL, and then having the CEL come on as you're driving home from the dealership . Gonna go back tomorrow to the dealership that's 40 min away... So much for the "everyday" supercar I owned an SL 65 before this Porsche and guess why I got it "lemoned"?? You guessed it! Guess I have some CEL magnetism.

The service guy was nice at least and ran through the DME print out and said that it was giving an intermittent error. Anybody else have this kind of problem? Am I just going to have to live with no reason CEL's?? The car is an 07 tip, bone stock.

Thanks

Every CEL is associated with some error code. Even if it clears, it should be stored in the DME's memory. What code did your dealer report?

If it is the same CEL, clearing it by disconnecting the battery just keeps your dashboard clear - it doesn't fix the problem. Similarly, if a CEL self clears, it doesn't necessarily mean the problem is gone.

If your dealer can't read the memory with PIWIS, you need to find another dealership.

Alternatively, you can either buy or find someone with a Durametric cable and scan the car yourself.

I would recommend investing in an inexpensive OBD II scanner like Actron or similar. Gives you the ability to find out what the code is and to reset it yourself. Can save you from having to return so frequently to the dealership

I don't have the code but my paperwork said "intermittent 02 signal" and they reprogrammed the DME to fix it (basically cleared it). I should hope they know what they're doing. It's Newport Porsche, basically the only Porsche dealer for Orange County so I'm assuming they have experience. That battery trick was something I learned from this forum from people that had CEL come on for no apparent reason. I'll keep you posted on what they tell me tomorrow.

You need the code digits and when you get that let us know, many of us have had them show up and found ways to correct them.

The problem with the battery trick is that it throws numerous faults that take awhile to clear and will cloud the diagnosis. Get the pocket scanner, <100$ sears, plug into obd2 port and read the code(and clear) it yourself.
Could be a million different, minor things.

+1

When you unplug the battery, or use PIWIS/Durametric to clear out all the codes, it may take several miles before the sensors are set again. For example, if you clear and reset all the emissions sensors, and then drive to the DMV for an OBD emissions test immediately thereafter, you will fail the emissions as several sensors will say either fail or not ready.

Well I dropped it off this morning. When I find out the codes and what the dealer says, I'll let you guys know. Thanks all for the advice.

If you could ask them specifically what OBD code it spit out, it would be very helpful.

It is most likely all the CELs are the same one.

Here is the copy of the printout the dealer emailed me. He described as a short circuit issue. He said something like they are going to move the 02 sensor to the opposite bank and see if it shorts there, then they know it's the 02 sensor for sure. If not, then they will continue searching for another cause...I don't know...I just want my car back!!

At first thought it sounds like a bad o2 sensor, passenger side, pre cat.

Without more information, I think one of 3 things is happening (in order of likelihood):

Either your O2 sensor is faulty, or the wiring harness/connector from O2 Sensor to ECU is damaged, or there is something wrong with your ECU/programming itself.

Yep...bad 02 sensor. They will have it ready this afternoon...and I can pick up my date tonight in a 911 turbo, not the red beetle loan car with a flower vase!

I went into this thread yesterday and bam... after 2 years of no CEL's I got one last night.... cursed!!!!!!!!

Cleared today- Cat efficiency issue left bank--- I guess this happens with aftermarket exhausts and older 997TT's? (mine is a 2007).
