Choking on start up.....

When I start up my 08 997tt occasionally the car feels like its choking and won’t start I have to turn the ignition off and then restart and it starts no problem with no other issues. This happens either in the cold or hot days or even when the car is warmed up and is intermittent. It can happen 2 or 3 times a week and not happen for a couple of days which makes it hard for me to prove to the dealer. My question is being that I am no expert does this sound like it needs to spark plugs??? If not any clue what may be causing this??<O</O

I took the car to the dealer today and they said that there is not enough back pressure coming from the exhaust. I am running an FVD Exhaust and I had the same issue when I had my Tubi. Any thoughts????

Steven, Sounds like you might need to get a tune. The lack of backpressure can cause more air to flow and if there isn't enough fuel it could stall. Just a theory.

I didn’t want to do a tune I am worried about voiding my CPO. Any other solutions?? The dealer said I wouldn’t damage the car if I keep going the way it is but I didn’t want to hear that struggling sound at startup.

Fuel pressure or fuel pump. Either that or look for an ignition system issue. The muffler would need to be really choked up with carbon to cause a start up issue.

The dealer said not enough back pressure coming from the exhaust, is this normal for an aftermarket exhaust (FVD)

I think you have to figure out what is causing the problem before any possible solutions can be offered. If it is lack of fuel on start-up then what is causing it? Bad injectors, spark, pump, exhaust, etc...According to your dealer, they think it has to do with your exhaust and lack of backpressure. You can try putting back on your stock exhaust and see if that solves the problem. If it does then you're probably going to need a tune to run the free flowing exhaust. I don't see another way around it. Maybe FVD has a more restrictive cat you can put on that keeps the same nice sound.

What is their diagnosis based on? A fault code? If so perhaps the o2 sensors are
out of position or fouled. who did the install of the system? Another possibility is the cats are choked with carbon/soot. That can happen in an environment where the engine has been overfueling or burning excessive oil for some time. The carbon has to build up somewhere and its usually the cats and muffler.

there was no fault codes I had the same isse when I ran my Tubi. the cats are pretty new so that shouldnt be causing the issue. I am trying to remeber if I had this issue when I ran it stock.

Well then i wouldn't be so hasty changing the exhaust. Maybe it is fouled plugs or a fuel pressure related problem then. It can only be a fuel or spark issue. It's a process of elimination really. For my money if i was to be putting it to labour i'd start with checking for any air leaks in the intake system, then do plugs, then check fuel delivery pressure. Maybe try another dealer in the process.

Due to access often the fix is not so quick and easy. I still think an experienced trouble shooter will be able to fastback the cause without causing the customer unnecessary pain in removing aftermarket systems and the likes particularly when there is no history of problem related exhaust issues with these two brands mentioned.
