First gear sucks on 997 tip
I have about 300 miles on my upgraded torque converter, it takes some getting used to as it feels that the gear doesnt engage untill higher in the RPM, but at that time the cars making some serious boost and rips out of the gate like a bat out of hellllll- IMO- mod worth getting.

Wanted to throw my 2 cents in for ya.
Wether you have an auto or manual the RPMs have to be raised to launch the car from a standstill. Lag isn't unique to the tip, as the manual has lag challenges too. Your stock tip, when launched well, will likely launch quicker off the line and be more consistent in 60ft times than someone trying to achieve the same with a manual. The advantages of the manuals tend to be more apparent when rolling, etc.
There are forum members who have run 10 sec qtr mile times in a tip with exhaust and an ECU/TCU tune only, don't know of someone with a manual that's made that claim. That being said, most threads I read about on here revolve around those trying to improve 60-130 etc...versus launching the car from a light or qtr mile dragstrip.
I would first contact the several available board sponsors who offer a TCU/ECU tune before bothering with the torque converter, etc. People who typically build the tip trans are dealing with much higher horse power.
Report back once you do the ECU or TCU...from the many posts I've read it transforms the car.

I enjoy launching the car most when flipping the gear **** to manual mode and engaging in first gear, then simply flipping the gear **** back to the right (auto) before it red lines.
Rarely do I feel a need to brake and load up the boost ever. I do normally drive in sports mode though.

Paddle shift steering wheel is a must for this car. Makes it easy to stay in automode with sport on and down shift when ever more revs, or power is needed. I think you can retro fit the new pdk paddle shift steering wheel if you want to say oe. I went with FVD wheel, car is much better and funner to drive. Should have come this way from the factory. Push bottoms on the oe wheel are a joke.
Guys...there's one piece of the puzzle missing that also can change the way the tip feels....the TCU software. We spent A LOT of time developing two different TCU programs for the tip cars we work on. One is a milder more "daily driver" type of file, and the other is an aggressive "road racer" type of file. Not only do you need hardware to really make the tip feel like it's engaging harder and shifting stronger, but you absolutely need the right software to control it.
Between 997.1TT 6sp and tip i read somewhere that tip is faster till 4th, and 6sp is better than tip after 4th, mainly due to:
1. Once the Tip only has 5 gears, it has more speed per gear and less gear change. Both gearbox suffer lag during upshifts, but the tip a bit more than 6sp.
2. Despite the Tip having less one gear, it makes more speed in 5th per rpm than the manual gearbox in 6th gear per rpm. So due the shorter gear ratio of the 6sp gearbox, hits the redline in any gear sooner and more easily because it has more power available to pull each gear.

As an additional example to my own thread: today at lunch I was at a stoplight with a suped-up G35 coupe next to me. I usually don't race (
) but this guy was one of those annoying cars with loud exhaust, blue racing color with a spoiler, darting through traffic etc. Light turns green and he jumps forward. I mash the gas and have the customarily slow, anemic start. He was about a full car length ahead for the first second or two, then the turbos kicked in and the car took off and overtook him. I know, I know, beating even a suped-up G35 with a 911 Turbo is like Jordan in his prime playing one on one with an 11-year old girl. But my point is that even my passenger was wondering why the car felt so sluggish initally when I floored it. Based on all the comments in this thread though, seems like this is normal. Looking forward to upgrading to a Turbo S with PDK in a couple of years

Your car is starting out in 2nd gear so:
1) Press the sport button (if you don't have sports chrono use opt #2)
2) Select 1st gear from shifter or steering wheel
3) Brakeboost, as no automatic will achieve an optimal start w/o doing this.
