Rusted tire weights

Here in sunny California, we are no longer allowed to have lead tire weights. I think they are worried that the seagulls at the beach will....

1. Be attracted to my beautiful HRE p40's
2. When they are unsuccessful at eating the aluminum rims, they will go for the softer lead weights
3. Then they will develop acute lead poisoning from the weights, they will go mad
4. Then they will attack innocent children and mothers............

So, in attempt to prevent this cataclysmic event, they now use iron tire weights.

When I picked up my turbo (3/11), i kept my HRE p40's and had the dealer put the new tires on my existing p40's. The weights are iron and are rusted. The wheels look like S**t!!!!

Any suggestions (i.e. naval jelly rust remover followed by a sealant)???

Mike

That was actually a very entertaining post

If you want, give me a ring tomorrow on my direct line. I will find out which weights we are using, but they are protected. I have had mine on for 1.5 years with zero rusting and 36k miles. I also live about a mile from the beach. They should not look like that.

My number is listed below.

Talk to you soon.

Great post - didn't believe this would come down to rim weights! That does look awful.......can you coat the weights before mounting?

Cheers,

Yikes! I would think that the weights would come already coated with something - Didn't the manufacturer think they would be getting wet???

We use the steel ones now as well. Not only do they rust, but more of them are needed to get the same amount of weight. Not ideal, but it's the way regulation is heading. Chrome cleaner will take it right off.

Dang that's hideous, especially on those nice looking wheels. Who installed them? They make coated weights.

Well, if people stopped eating those weights the government wouldn't have to step in..... How freaking annoying. That would drive me nuts and those wheels look way too nice for this. They do make coated weights and I use them. Give the HRE-Guy a call, he definitely has the solution.

Hopefully the next issue is not getting the "glue" off of the wheels.

I would take the old ones off, replace with new plain lead weights or porsche factory plastic coated weights, just replace with all the same weights and center to the old position.

Update - the saga continues

I’m happy to report no seagulls have died during these difficult economic tire weight times in 2011.<O</O
<O</O

I was able to put a little Navel Jelly rust remover to clean them, then resealed them with a clear marine varnish. Worked so so..... The weights were a little darker looking but I could live with the look. <O</O
<O</O

Until last week when I asked my detail guy if he had any suggestions. The rust started to come back. He said (in broken English) ill make one of the wheels look great, and if you like it, ill do all of them.

<O</OI come out after work and he hands me a crumpled brown lunch bag. He said "They are really clean". He pried off the weights (taking care not to damage the rims) and apparently, they are much easier to clean up off the car. They cleaned up so nice, he took the liberty to all 4 rims. He then expalined he would get some 2 sided tape and put the back on next week.

I just about s**t my pants.

I have to say that I cannot even tell driving the car without the weights. I have kept the speed under 65 mph.
<O</O

I called a tire store in the midwest and they sold me new weights made of plumbum (atomic symbol Pb).

Apparently plumbum is a metal with special properties that makes it ideal for tire weights.

<O</OThe rims will be balanced with the new plumbum weights this week.
<O</O
<OMore to follow.
