Help Me pick a car
That is a lucky friend indeed to not have to choose between the two. I think what really has me torn between the r8 and the 911 Turbo S is really the audi is very good looking. I agree that Porsche has a very user friendly set of electronics. Have you found any issue getting a Turbo S available in the color combo you want? I already know that I am going to need to buy the Turbo S from either Miami or West Palm Beach because none of the other dealerships closer to me have any Turbo S' and I understand that getting a build allocation is very hard at this point.
Thanks for the input!

11CayenneS, thanks for starting this thread since you and I are in very similar shoes. Out of the options you've listed, I've narrowed it down to the Turbo S and R8 5.2 (6MT). I've gone back and forth on either choices more times than I can remember. I can buy a brand new R8 for about the same price as an used Turbo S Cab, or a brand new Turbo S coupe.
I've driven both cars extensively (have a friend that is lucky enough to own both), and here's my personal opinion-
If you're looking for attention, whether wanted or unwanted, hands down, it's the R8. The majority of the population is not going to know the difference between a non-Turbo and a Turbo, and definitely what sets the 'S' version apart from the non S. Here in Newport Beach, CA, Porsches are a dime a dozen. I believe that if there were as few Porsches around as the R8, then the P cars would be getting the same amount of attention, esp the Turbo version with it's wide rear.
I'm NOT a fan of the Audi's interior controls. The Porsche is just easier- there's a simple button for everything. I think it's perfect simplicity. However, in terms of interior appearance, I'd have to give Audi the edge. The materials are as good as the Porsche, and resonate what's going on in the exterior.. just beautiful.
I give a slight advantage to the R8 for the 'fun to drive' factor. The Turbo S is a beast, but there is something magical about the way the R8 carves the corners- which in my opinion is where the real fun is anyway, not in a drag race. Best way to describe it is 'confidence inspiring.'
So why is the Turbo S still in the running?
Bragging rights- 0-60 in under 3 seconds, the quarter in under 11. You can be in stealth mode, knowing that you can spank just about any car out there. The Turbo S also has a slight advantage in being more practical when it comes to storage. The back seats, are practical for a fair amount of 'stuff', including groceries, a golf bag, etc.
I know we don't buy these cars for resale value, but when it comes time to unload it, it's tough to decide which will hold its value better. I've read several posts debating that the 997 will be the last true 'Porsche', and there are indeed changes to the new 991 that make me wonder. However, if I were to bet, I doubt that overall Porsche will take a step backward with the new Turbo model once it unveils. I don't believe Audi has any plans to tinker with the R8 until about 2013 or 2014.
Sorry if all the points I've made are obvious, but I hope it sheds some light on your decision. I'm getting ready to pull the trigger on either car in the next week or so- let's keep each other informed. Either way, I don't think we can lose!

Having had several 911's in 997 S, 996 TT S, and 996TT forms as well as a few cayeene turbo's I was itching to get back into a turbo S. My last one was guards red but a cab and I got over the cab thing since I wanted to track the car from time to time.
Lot's of good examples of turbo S out there but mostly silver, grey paint to sample, white or black. White is hot imo but I could not pull the right deal on a few white ones.
Good Luck, I think with a turbo S you just can not go wrong.
I just purchased a TTS and drove all the cars listed. The TTS just had everything you can ask for in a DD. I also felt the Porsche blends with other cars better than let's say an Aston or an Audi R8. I owned a Vantage in the past, and was not thrilled having it as my DD, so I got rid of it. Go with the Porsche TTS and you won't be disappointed IMHO.
I noticed no one listed a LP550-2 Gallardo??? They look fantastic and the price isn't bad for a brand new one...

11CayenneS,
White with black interior seems to be a difficult combo to find, especially in the 'slightly used' market. This goes for both coupe and cab form. I can find a couple new ones, but I've been able to realize savings of 20K+ off of MSRP for a TTS with less than 2000 miles, some even with CPO (2500.00 value, give or take). There are quite a few black ones out there.
I agree.. the R8 is a great looking car, but IMHO it may get a bit too much attention as a DD and doesn't 'blend in' like the TTS.
What color combo are you looking for? Sounds like you are leaning more towards the Porsche? A good number of used ones are coming from Florida- you should have much easier access. You should also be able to find a used R8 for a quick test drive and compare the two.

Hey Kw911TT, As someone who has a Turbo, is there anything about it that you wish was different? I love the Turbo S from a driving stand point, but am feeling a bit underwhelmed with the design both interior and exterior. That being said, I felt that way about porsche before I got my first Cayman S, which even though I didnt think it was as sexy as the other cars, it very quickly grew on me and I found it to be amazing!
Any options that you think are a must have?

11CayenneS, I agree with a lot of feedback from other forum members. Porsche to me is more pratical design vs. R8's art design as a DD. I drove the R8 V8 version many times, even took the Audi driving school (it was a blast). There is something to be said about the mid-engine format like the R8, the Cayman/boxster. But the turbo is so useful in so many ways; 4 seats, better EPA, better auto (PDK), better powder delivery. Many I know who owns the Aston, California, Gt don't really drive them much, more like a garage queen, I also don't like the attention from a R8 and others on your list.
