What I do is:
1. Traction Control off
2. Sport plus button on
3. AC off (as well as any of the heater/ac controls)
4. Left foot on Brake
5. Stomp the accelerator.......it will go to 5K RPM, and sound like it is hitting a rev limiter.
6. Watch center console....when is says Launch Control Active, let go of the brake.
7. Smile

Hey Denlinn, you probably don't have the sport paddle steering wheel right? That is probably why the indicator shows up on the dash.....

Yes, I have the sport paddle wheel. I get the sport/sport plus indications in the wheel, just not the launch control light (in the wheel) as advertised in the manual.

I've been thinking of trading my 996 in for a 997 PDK car but am relucatant. The main reason I want it is for the launch control, but I know myself and I know I'd launch that car all the time. I hear there's a "launch counter" built into the car.. If that's the case, I don't want it as that would serve as nothing more then a depreciation-o-meter for me.

Does this counter really exist?

That's the first I've heard of it. But, it shouldn't be a surprise, cars today seem to track everything. All that matters is using LC doesn't void warranty.

Ok, just a follow-up and correction. I don't know how I missed it, or maybe it didn't show up for some other reason, but launch control is indicated in both the right side of the steering wheel, as well as the center of the gauges where the digital display is located. Here's a pic to prove I'm not completely nuts

Haha, what an awesome pic, I bet that was fun to take! It's been awful rainy here in northern California for the past few days, once I can find a patch of dry road I'll report back!

How hard do you usually stomp on the gas? Does it need to be particularly aggressive?

Yes, it does need to be aggressive. First time I tried it I didn't stomp it, and it didn't work. Good luck on that dry patch of road.
