997.2 Turbo S problem - high speed resonated noise

Hi,*

I just joined this site and wonder if anyone has encountered the same problem. I just got a new 997.2 Turbo S, after breaking in the car has no problem cruising at 197MPH. Few days ago I tried to climb to the top speed but when I reached 175MPH there was a funny resonated noise, middle pitch, just like when you use your finger rubbing on the rim of a wine glass. The noise might have come from rear right end. It was gone when I slowed down, but when I increase the speed the noise was louder and didn't sound right.*

The service guy didn't know what went wrong with the car, does anyone know what went wrong?*

Thanks,

Jun C.

I read somewhere that newer 997TTS and Panamera TT are on recall about turbo problems, that might be your problem.

At those speeds air does very funny things. Make sure you go over the car with a fine tooth comb to make sure that all the parts are secure and that nothing has moved. My guess is that it's just air getting by some seals (e.g., around the intercooler).

BTW, is the car stock or has any work been done to it?

I read that too but I thought it was the Panamera TT and Panamera TTS not the 997.

The TT-S has the same turbocharger as the regular .2 TT as far as I know, so I don't see any reason why to recall an "S" and not a non S TT... This is not a valid information I'm afraid...

"A potentially defective turbine wheel in the turbochargers of 2011 and 2012 Porsche Panamera Turbo and Turbo S models and the 2012 Porsche Cayenne Turbo has led to a recall. There are 270 units affected among the three models, with a casting defect being cited as the cause of the trouble. The issue could lead to a fracture in the turbocharger itself, which could then lead to follow-on problems, smoke and risk of fire."

Don't know if it affects a Turbo S but something your Porsche service adviser could answer in a few seconds.

997 TTS engine completely different than Panamera TTS engine. Recall makes no mention of a "fourth" model affected.

They are not recalling the engine but the turbo's because flaws in the casting. My guess is the company making all of Porsche's turbo's are the same and Porsche usually uses the same parts over all platforms. I would not be unheard of problems to crop up first with someone using his car all out, you know like 190mph and not at 75mph.

Maybe...but as you say just a "guess" - still no mention of models other than Panamera and Cayenne.

But someone has to be the first, but if I "guessed" that there might be a problem when many owners reported that their 993 had CEL problems and it was found the blockage of the secondary air injection system which caused thousand to fix or the RMS in the 996 when the first few people had the problems with no recall until later. Its a guess but an educated one, which is more than other have added.

I think that if you have a problem with the turbocharger, the noise would come at different speeds under boost. Just because you are going fast and need boost, that does not make it any different than the boost level needed to get up to the speed where the malfunction takes place. ( If that makes sense )

Has the climate changed in the time that you have done this full speed run. For example, it has become very hot here in the last few days, none of my turbo cars are as quick when its 95 degrees outside. Maybe that could affect your top speed.

As for the noise, there is alot of air moving around the car at that speed. I would check the intercooler intakes for possible debris. I as a rule when washing the car make sure to spray both sides of the intercooler. Running water down the intake and back up through the bottom.

I would also pay close attention to my tires, and related pressures. Tire pressure climbs on a high speed run like that, and if you are hearing noises, I recommend you find it, before a run at speed causes a failure.

It can't be a mechanical failure... it's probably aerodynamic. check if something got loose a bit... probably a rubber part...
