"Sticky" gearshift 997 Turbo MK1
"Sticky" gearshift 997 Turbo MK1
Hi guys, I'm brand new to this forum, just want to know from other 997 Turbo MK1 (manual) owners if they are experiencing the same "problem" as I have. Recently upgraded from a 996 Turbo to a 997 Turbo mk1, I find changing from 1st- 2nd very "sticky", meaning the shifter doesn't just glide in, but I need to use more force than with any of the other gearchanges. Is this normal? My 996 all gearchanges were very easy, now with the 997 it is very tricky especially when wanting to pull off fast and accellerate.
"Short shift" meaning the standard gearlever? What is the best way to change, just force a quick change? Maybe I must just get used to it.... just bought the car 2 weeks ago
Short shift is an option. Just makes the throws shorter. I don't have any issue with engagement. I too had a 996TT previously, and other than longer gear throws with its standard box, from what I remember, the 997 doesn't feel any more awkward. If anything, it's smoother and more direct. Now if you want a tractor-like gear shift, a C6 Vette owns "sticky".
hope that helps

my 07 feels the same. I wouldn't call it "sticky", more like a stiff 1st to 2nd shift but as you noted the shifts to 3rd and beyond are very smooth. I drove 6 different 07-08 manual turbos before purchasing and all were exactly the same in terms of the 1st to 2nd shift being stiff

I actually took the car out yesterday and drove it hard for about an hour and think I am getting used to the gearshifts. It seems you have to really force the shifts and by doing that you can achieve fast shifts, but 1-2 will take a bit of getting used to, I am actually going down to the dealership this afternoon and will ask to drive another TT just to feel if it is the same! Regards
08 with SSK option - all shifts smooth except into 1st when cold. You ought to check out adjustment - shouldn't be "sticky".
Thanks, can you elaborate what you mean by adjustment?
I'm with M9L - going from 2nd into 1st feels stiff to me, but going from 1st to 2nd doesn't take any extra force. I think going by the dealer is a good idea- I've driven other 997's to see if mine was "normal." (it mostly is
)As long as you don't hear any grinding and the gears engage correctly I wouldn't worry too much about it (even if it's not "normal").

Thanks for the opinion. Had the car with 5K on the clock now 14K been like that since day one no grinding just some stiffness. No major issues on the track or daily driving just annoying in traffic. Figured if it is smth bad it would deteriorate to smth more obvious then I would take it to dealer.
