100 Octane fuel CHECK ENGINE LIGHT

I will be getting this checked out further by the dealer and some friends but for now its late and nothing is open and friends are sleeping. So i will try here first, hopefully someone can help.

I had little more than a 1/4 tank of 93 in the car and i put about 5 gallons of Sunoco 100 Octane in. My plan was to drive the car to the gas station that has 100 octane on pump and fill up the rest there. Well i got about 5 miles down the road and i threw a check engine light. Haven't had one at all since i've owned the car. Im guessing and hoping it is just something to do with the 100 octane gas. The car is running normal other then the light being on.

I have the APR 100 octane program which is why i wanted to do this in the first place. Apparently i have a fault clearer on the program as well but i cant manage to figure that program selecting out (now that ive actually had to use it). I will also be calling APR tomorrow for some help on the HOW-TO.

If anyone can, please advise. Thanks guys!

You'll need to read the code.

Just a change in octane shouldn't set off a CEL - maybe there was something wrong with the gas. The DME can adjust to different octane ratings without throwing a CEL - we're just guessing until you get the fault code read.

Could be a variety of issues but code reading is a must. Probably not due to 100 octane, more than likely coincidence timing wise and a post cat too rich CEL.

P0492 -Secondary Air Injection System, Bank 2 - Insufficient Flow.

Turns out that was the code. Definitely nothing to do with the Octane. Put it on the lift at a friends shop tonight and read the code. We looked for any major signs of leaks or off hoses, saw nothing. Cleared the coded and drove around for 30+- miles has not returned. I will be taking the car to Porsche on Friday regardless. Any information on this would be great. Thanks again guys.

Hi, this fault has to do with a faulty air Solenoid Valve or a Faulty air system relay...
When you erased the code did you push the car at all when you drove it? Because you need to do that if you want to be sure CEL won't pop up again...

I did a pull through 1st to 3rd and numerous 2nd and 3rd gear pulls. Nothing so far last night. I will take the car out again tonight.

Here is how you can clear the CEL with the APR tune if you need to do so in the future:

- start the engine
- set cruise control ON
- Push the cruise control stalk down and hold it in that position for about 5 seconds.
- After 5 seconds, the fuel empty light will blink and the code will clear.
- release the cruise control stalk.

You can do it while driving the car as well.

That sounds much simpler than the directions given from APR in the pamphlet. Thanks a lot! Is there an activating motion needed to be done before changing programs or clearing codes?

Unhappy

I am not sure what you mean by "activating motion" ...

I apologize. I was reading the How-to and it said first i would have to activate the tune on the car first with a serious of motions almost as you described to clear the code. Maybe i was over thinking it.

I will be switching to 100 octane in the near future, expect a PM from me when i get stuck on switching the programs

No problem. I have never noticed this statement in the doc I received with the tune. I'll check tonight when I go home.

Regarding switching programs, it is a little bit more convoluted, for good reasons ... but after doing it 2 or 3 times it is really easy. I can post tomorrow step-by-step instructions if you want and then you can always PM me if it is still not clear.

BTW, if you haven't tried the 100 octane APR tune yet, you are missing out. It is ridiculous! Just keep in mind that it takes around 30 miles for the tune to adapt fully.
