Mechanical difference between 997.2 TT and TTS

In the market and trying to decide whether to hold out for the right S or take a non S PDK with sports chrono which I like. From what I understand, a tune will bring the non S to the same power level as a S. If software can achieve this, my question is whether there is any difference mechanically in the engine or transmission in the S, or are the parts the same so the S is not any more durable mechanically than a non S? Thanks.

No mechanical difference at all... the engine is exactly the same.

I may be wrong, but I thought the S had different turbos...

Part nr's 9A1-123-013-74 for left turbocharger and 9A1-123-014-73 for the right one on both models. It's just a flash that makes the difference.

Is the entire drivetrain, suspension and exhaust setup the same as well? if so then what are the differences to justify the premium when anyone can buy a software flash and have a Turbo which will out perform a stock Turbo S?

It's all the same. Turbo S comes with more standard features that are optional on the turbo. If you optioned out a turbo to what a turbo S has the turbo S is cheaper and has a bit more power too. So value wise the turbo S is better if you want everything that comes with it.

Also, with the turbo S you get the extra power w/ a full Porsche warranty, not true if you get a turbo and then tune it. Personally, I feel the two are so close to being equal that you should just get the regular turbo

Thanks for all the info. I understand the warranty issue wih the tune and that a S may be more economical in some instances because of the standard items like ceramic brakes. My concern was more about whether there was some mechanical/physical difference in the engine or powertrain that is not even offered as an option for a regular turbo. Other than the carbon fiber air box, it appears the answer is "no."

So if you tuned a TT the power should be the same as TTS? What happens if you tune a TTS? Will the TTS now be faster than a tuned TT or the same?

I'm in the same dilemma you are. Have a TT and TTS I can buy and the difference is about $20K....

I am not an expert, but from what I have read, the tuned turbo an tuned turbo s would have the same power levels. That is why I wanted to know if the internals are the same for longevity purposes.

If the car's are both physically the same cept some options are included at a reduced price as part of the package and it's a software difference, then tuned TT and tuned TTS should be the same. If you were able to tune the TTS to be better than a stock TTS, then I don't see why you wouldn't then flash the TT to have that same better tune resulting in again both being the same.
