Going Catless Necessary for Full Gains?

Hi All

New member but have been reading everyones input here for a while

I have a 08 Turbo tip w the basic bolt-ons. FS Xpipe w 200 cell cats, FS intake, Forge DVs, Proto 100 octane tune, and GT2RS coolers.

When I go to upgrade the VTGs, ive been told I not only need the TCU tune, but also need to go cat less to get the full advantage this setup.

My question is, will I lose noticable power if I stick with the 200 cell cats with the above setup? I could buy the cat bypass pipes i suppose but the exhaust is only a few months old and would hate to get rid of the cats already.

Thanks in advance for any advice

Mike

catless is not worth the slim HP gains (relatively speaking) vs. smell, soot, pollution etc. IMO.

I have the 63vtgs and tune etc..., and directly compared catless with catted. iirc, about 0.2-0.3sec difference from 100-200km/hr. Powerband may have been slightly different. The biggest plus was the sound (I have AWE exhaust). Without the cats, if you go under a bridge with the windows down and get on the gas it sounds AWESOME, like a racing car. Not too shabby even with the cats though. The smell at idle was not so great with the windows down, but the tune could be adjusted if needed.

If and when I do my next set of mods I may consider going catless again. But I wouldn't say that it's a "must" at the power level of 63vtgs.

A catless set-up will perform much better than a 200 cell cat system. You will experience crisper throttle response and quicker turbo spool. Overall the car will perform much better catless. I have used 200 cell cat and catless set-ups back to back several times and the result is always the same. The car is much nicer to drive catless, if you are seeking a performance drive.

Catless is the way to go. No extra soot on my bumper or any type of smell. Mind you I'm running DFI engine if that makes a diff.

My other cars that have been catless have smelled very very bad and left soot all over my rear bumper. I'm surprised you're not smelling anything on your car Chris. But maybe that's because you're going too fast and the smell is really enjoyed by all the drivers behind you?

I would love to get some feedback from tuners. I've been told recently that unlike the 997.1 where removing the cats makes a huge difference, going catless or moving to 100 or 200 cell cats makes a very minor difference on the 997.2. It would be cool to see some numbers as I hate having that smell in my garage as I pull out, hate cleaning all the soot off my other car (it's white) all the time, and since I'm in California, hate the eventual smog related issues.

I've been on track days with both windows down. At idle or at WOT I don't smell anything and neither do my passengers. I've had other cars which, I removed the cat and did get a bit extra soot but not much smell either.

Could it be the 94 octane I run up here in Canada? No idea. I bet it has something to do with the DFI engine.

Performance wise go catless. Actually, listen to Speed Tech or better yet contact Stef at Europipe. He will tell you catless is the way to go if you don't care about the environment, smell, or soot. Turbo cars need as little back pressure as possible.
