Aero kit

My car does not have the aero kit so I decided to try and get the 4 black plastic non aero pieces painted. They look identical to the factory aeros just in black plastic. The body shop said the material is unable to hold paint because it is not smooth. Anyone have any experience painting the black pieces?

Go to another body shop ,it's a simple job they just need to be prepped properly like any surface.

Interesting idea - can you let us know how it turns out?? And approx price? The aero kit does give the car a modern look IMO.

I currently have an 08 turbo in white w factory aero kit. Before this however, I had an 07 turbo in gt silver with the factory non-painted rocker moldings. A couple days after buying the car, I took it to a body shop referred by the selling dealership. The body shop was able to paint all 4 sides without a problem. They looked 100% perfect. They did tell me before painting them that the panels could lose the paint more easily than a panel meant for paint. I had the car for almost 4 years and no a chippging at all.. Its a great, inexpensive upgrade that makes a big difference on the exterior

Wow, that's very cool - seems like it would be an easy upgrade & prob a quick turn around I would think? A few hundred bucks perhaps? I have a Meteor Grey 07 TT - the black lowers just look a tad out of place IMO.. THX for that.

Np

If I remember correctly, cost was around $800. Turnaround time would be based on how efficient and busy the body shop would be. A good body shop can definitely do the job for you. An even cheaper and great alternative is you can do just paint the front lip, which is the major difference maker.

The OEM aerokit pieces are polyurethane which will flex by design and need special paint.

There's also this:

Spray on rubber coating which will flex. Only question is color selection but for $30, might be worth a try. I believe the stuff Suncoast is using is actually Plastidip. You can get it on Amazon as well for $7/can. If it doesn't look good, you can just peel it off.

That stuff looks neat, the only trouble is the color selection. They have a few basics but nothing that would match our cars. For example I have arctic silver metallic. The options they have are black, red, yellow, and blue.

Yeah, that's the problem. I'm in the same boat as you and was thinking of trying it out since I have a Carrera White car. But I doubt it will match correctly. Did you call around for a quote yet? I'm going to do that today.

Quotes ranging from $600 to $1800 to do all 4 pieces. The lower range wanted to mask the car and leave the parts on. But then after touching the material recommended not doing it at all and said they didn't feel comfortable the paint would stay on.

One company quoted $1400 and seemed to know exactly what they were talking about. Full removal including bumper removal first, sanding and full prep, additive to help keep the paint on even with flex, sealer, etc. He said it would be perfect and would hold. And this company does Sharkwerks' cars. Probably going this route.
