Metal popping noise from rear when slipping under hard acceleration?

Hi All....

Not sure how to describe the sound any better than the title...But it did not sound really good...It kind of reminds me of the nasty noise Anti-Lock brakes make when they engage??

I also posted this on Renntech, but was hoping someone may have some insight/thoughts on a new issue I just encountered.

My car has a Softronic tune, and runs great! I have not had it out much due to the lovely Illinois winter....The other day
I took it out for lunch...No snow on the ground but some residual salt dust from the last freeze.

So I probably did not let the car warm up enought (shame on me)....I drove a short distance and I punched it ( I missed that )...When the turbos's spooled up the car broke loose all wheels like usual (Tiptronic BTW)...As the wheels started spinning/slipping I noticed a not so good sound (sounded like the rear)...Sounded like popping metal...like something in
the drive train was slipping (or even breaking??). Never heard it before?? When I accelerate very hard (but not enough
to spin the wheels.....No noise at all...Drive normal or even hard...no noise....Only if I bury the pedal and it breaks looks I hear a few pops/knocks. No other time??

Notes: Car was not completely warm, temperature was in the 30's, salt dust on road, Tiptronic transmission.
I called my dealer and left a message for my mechanic to see if he has any thoughts...waiting to hear back. Service guy
said it may be due to it being cold (weather and car??)

Would love to hear any thoughts on the subject....Without scaring me too bad....I have no warranty any longer

Thanks!

It might be the pressure plate starting to slip with the tune.

I think I had a similar experience as yours. I heard it last year, also seem to do it when it was really cold outside. But for me, it only did it when I was running the 100 octane map.

Would that occur on a Tiptronic? I thought A/T's used Torque Converters as opposed to Manuals that use a clutch plate, pressure plate and throw out bearings...But I have never dissected a Tiptronic.

Thanks!

Thanks! The mechanic said it may be due to the extreme cold, salt dust, cold tires, etc...Suggested it may the the traction control trying to get it under control...But it sure did not sound good! It makes no noise under any other conditions (even really hard acceleration, short f spinning the tires), so I will assume and hope it is nothing major.

Do you have the locking differential? Possible engagement, since you were in boost.

No locking diff. But thanks. Mechanic thought it may be the traction control combined with the cold weather and slipping on the cold road/tires/and car being cold??

Could be the traction control as you mentioned, retarding the timing to back out the power. I definitely don't recommend you doing this too often as it could seriously damage your engine if it runs lean.

Thanks for the reply.

To be clear, you are saying that the factory Traction Control or PSM actually leans the mixture and can cause the engine to fail? I would have thought they would have engineered it better than that. Hard to believe they would put technology in place to stop wheels from spinning and in turn destroy the motor......

Good to know.

Took the car out again yesterday and let it warm up (outside temp was a little warmer too)...Punched it a few times, and heard no noise. I did not really hit it hard enough to break the tires loose again, but I am assuming nothing serious if hard and slow acceleration creates no noise at all? Been reading lots of posts with varying opinions of the ZF Tip.. Most feel it is bulletproof with a few defects...I think for good measure, when the temp warms up, I am going to go have both differentials drained and re-filled and the transmission flushed and new filter installed. Some insurance

Sounds like PSM kicking in to "right" the car as some wheels were breaking loose. It sounds exactly like ABS system because that's what it uses to brake certain wheels to stabilize the car. Normal and nothing to worry about.
