The Ultimate GIAC/Champion Motorsport 68mm VTG Upgrade Thread!

We have been receiving a lot of inquiries on the Champion Motorsports 68mm package for the 997 platform so this thread will be used for all current information and future updates.

The dyno below shows the results that can be expected through the typical upgrade paths.

Solid lines: This vehicle added Champion 68mm turbos and the corresponding GIAC software to his bolt-on 997.1 Turbo. Full modification list includes:
  • GIAC ECU Software
  • GIAC TCU Software
  • Champion 68mm VTG Turbos
  • IPD Plenum and Y-Pipe
  • 997.2 Intercoolers
  • 2.5" Exhaust
With minimal supporting mods and stock turbo inlets, the turbos are very restricted. With boost peaking at 18 psi, we are only beginning to see the capabilities of these turbos. Power results come in at 537 wheel horsepower and 510 wheel torque to four wheels, on a Mustang Dyno. This vehicle has a tiptronic transmission, so a manual transmission vehicle can expect slightly higher results due to lower drivetrain loss.

Small dotted lines: The same vehicle came back to our facilities after adding upgraded supporting modifications. This included Champion Motorsport carbon inlet pipes, Champion Motorsport intercoolers, upgraded injectors, water-methanol injection and a larger exhaust. Full modification list includes:
  • GIAC ECU Software
  • GIAC TCU Software
  • Champion 68mm VTG Turbos
  • Champion Carbon Inlets
  • Champion Intercoolers
  • IPD Plenum and Y-Pipe
  • 3" Exhaust
  • Upgraded Injectors
  • Water-Methanol Injection
  • Built Tiptronic Transmission
This vehicle retained the same software, with the only changes being the additional hardware. Through simply freeing up restrictions, the car picked up 20 wheel horsepower and 27 wheel torque. Peak power results are 557 wheel horsepower and 537 wheel torque.

Large dotted lines: After testing the car without any software changes, we flashed the ECU with the GIAC/Champion Motorsport file for stock internals. With fewer restrictions and more available fuel, we were able to turn the boost up to approximately 22-23 psi. The changes made through hardware and software resulted in huge power gains, showing peak numbers of 661 wheel horsepower and 725 wheel torque to four wheels!

We have tested these turbos up to 28-30 psi on vehicles with a built motor, so there is still plenty of headroom. For those customers who wish to upgrade their motor internals, we can supply you with a file to take full advantage of what the 68mm VTG's are capable of.

997.2 68mm Champion VTG Upgrade

Here is a dyno plot showing what can be expected on a stock turbo 997.2 Turbo or Turbo S, with the full GIAC/Champion Motorsport "9-second package." This is the same setup that went 9.837@135.13 on stock turbos.

Hardware includes:
  • GIAC ECU Software
  • Champion Motorsport Intercoolers
  • Tubi Race Exhaust
  • IPD Plenum
  • Werks1 Airbox & Y-Pipe

The dyno sheet below shows the same setup, this time with the addition of Champion 68mm VTG turbos. Power is up 45 wheel horsepower and 29 wheel torque using the stock fuel system. At this stage, power is limited by three factors: fuel headroom, limits of the PDK and limits of the engine internals. This setup has headroom for excess of 800 wheel horsepower, but the aforementioned issues would need to be addressed first. Development is currently in progress for maximum potential 997.2 68mm builds.

Why do we stick with VTG's?

This question comes up a lot with customers. The general consensus is that for big power, you need to switch to a GT-based turbo. While this may be true if you are building a car for the Texas Mile or similar (+1000 wheel horsepower), there is simply no turbo that can produce the massive powerband that the 68mm VTG's can. The car shown above makes 725 wheel torque at 4,000 RPM! As I stated previously, this car is also tuned for stock internals so we are not at the limit of what the hardware is capable of. We have headroom for another 6-8 psi of boost, which will place this setup right around 1000 crank horsepower with minimal lag to speak of. The VTG technology is a tremendous advancement in turbocharger technology, and with precise control of the turbine veins you can really have the best of both worlds (huge power with minimal lag).

To get rid of this technology for anything under 1000 horsepower would be short changing yourself. In many instances, the switch to a conventional turbo is made simply because of difficulty controlling the VTG turbo veins.

I will be posting further updates in this thread, and other are free to chime in with any thoughts of questions. If you are interested in an upgrade path for your vehicle, please feel free to contact me.

This customer vehicle recently headed out to Shift Sector's Airstrip Attack. The car ran great all day, despite 90 degree temperatures and a density altitude of 2800 feet.

This race was against an ESS supercharged BMW M3 (DCT). It is utilizing the VT2-625 kit on 100 octane fuel (claimed 575 wheel horsepower).

Here is another update from Shift S3ctor Airstrip Attack. This race is against a C6 Z06 with full bolt-ons (heads/cam) on 109 octane fuel. Full spec list for each car is in the video description.

Here is some more video footage taken from Shift Sector Airstrip Attack. This race is between the 997.1 Turbo with Champion 68mm turbos and a gutted C5 Z06 (claimed 2700 lbs. and 500 wheel horsepower).

Here is another race from Shift Sector Airstrip Attack. This race was between the 997.1 Turbo with Champion 68mm's and a Kenne Bell supercharged Dodge Charger SRT8 claiming 700 wheel horsepower.

Here is a race from a recent airstrip event, No Fly Zone in Bakersfield, CA. This race is against a Mustang GT500 with a 4.2L Kenne Bell supercharger upgrade. The driver claimed that the car was making 750 wheel horsepower.

Wow, that's awesome! I'm having the guys at Wright Motorsport do some of the same upgrades you listed a little at a time. I bet that car is a BEAST!

That's great! Let me know if I can answer any questions for you throughout the build process. That is a great path to take, and is similar to what this car did. Once you have the turbos, every little restriction you free up just continues to produce power gains.

Awesome results from the guys at GIAC!!

I'm sure everyone already knows, but we're HUGE advocates of the VTG turbocharger technology that Porsche supplies on these cars.

To make that kind of power, with full ECU control of boost and every safety measure still intact is a real testament to the level of expertise that GIAC has when it comes to tuning. That's why they're our only choice for tuning with our hardware!!

Awesome work guys!

How much? 1000 crank hp? No way!!!
What about overheat? Small turbos, they produce a lot of heat, maybe for one record 100-200 run is okay, but what about consistent times? Did you build cars with well prepped engine that produce such power?

Ps: I am very interested because i have another 997 Porsche of my brother with PP-Performance software without catalitics

Yes, as stated with built motor those numbers can be expected with this package. We test these vehicles on open strips for extended periods of time to ensure the safety of all hardware on the vehicle.

In the end, you get what you pay for. With the level of engineering between GIAC and Champion Motorsport, you will have the pinnacle of performance and reliability. The amount of hard driving that these cars go through is unparalleled, and they continue to perform every time.

Yes MegioN...we have built a few 3.8L Turbos that use this same turbo package, but with built engines. They produce between 800-840 whp, which is just about 1000 crank hp.

A couple of them are used mostly for track driving, so consistency is very important. So far, no real issues. The quality of the tuning plays a huge role in this.
