Dension Owners

I am considering installing a manual power switch to the PCM-Dension (they are connected on the same wire), to power cycle the system when it hangs... just to tell you how frustrated i have become with this issue!
The PCM is a total disgrace...and I agree...it is not worth going through all these gyrations just to have a working blue tooth and streaming solution.
I guess that is why I work with the Dension solution. The irony is that my unit on really hot days...will not turn on after I have had my car parked in the sun...without being reset two or three times...but my dealership says that it could be the amp.
I am not convinced that it is my amp...and will not chase this thing any more than I have. The amp issue only occurs a few times a year since I reside in PGH...so I live with this issue until it gets worse.
My E39 M5 from early 2002 had better blue tooth than this car...and that is a disgrace...but I am from the day that Porsche didn't even offer a marginal stereo. Now at least it is tolerable....so for the limited amount of time that I use this car.....I live with it as well.

Hi, all, I am just curious that sleep mode and needed to reset is something to do with power source of Dension unit?Did you guys connect the power with PCM or other places?Does the power of Dension get completed cut off at sometime, so it need to be handshake or through initial set up again.
I have used the older Dension unit (no BT, only the ipod player) without any issue at all and I would like to buy the 500SBT, but after reading your comments……… I kind of wondering if Dension 500 SBT is the way to go.

After my experience, no, it is not the way to go. I have the same handshake/power up problem on mine, and I cannot recommend this product. I wish I'd heeded the warnings on here and Rennlist, and gone a different route.
I wish I saw this before starting my install. 3 months, 5 installation re-do, all at the requests of Eric based on feedback from Dension engineers. I was always the person to blame: i did not connect the optical cables right (I did), I did not take the care for PIWIS programing (I did), I did not use an unswitched power (I did), I did not use an official iPhone 5 cable (I did).
The issue is always the same: the initial handshake between the PCM and the Dension is a hit-or-miss. Timing issues. Once every 2 or 3 starts of the car, the Dension refuses the start, leaving me without any audio or navigation.
The latest feedback I got: it works for 99% of users... and I am the 1% to which this doesn't work. No word on offering a replacement unit, or any refund.
Stay away from this device.

dls911: what do you mean by reset? Does clicking on the recessed "reset" button on the controller works ? Do you have to turn off the car and restart the car, after the reset to work, or turn on and off the PCM, or does it simply work by hitting the reset ?

I remember Eric@bumperplugs mentioned that Dension unit needs to on constant power. And I wonder if this is could be the issue for sleeping mode.
And can anyone can tell me how to install the microphone or how to hide the wire?I have tried to search on the internet, but couldn’t find any information.

The microphone wire can be routed along the a-pillar, up by the windshield and all the way to the rear view mirror.
But sound quality is just awful so skip it, change the dip switches to disable the phone function...

jako, yup exactly. the only difference for me is that the previous track button doesn't work. I'll try to fix that.
I'm curious, where did you guys end up installing your dension USB port? glovebox, rear center console, or somewhere else?
Sent from my iPhone5 using IB AutoGroup

I decided to put it in my rear center console. I just read this on another thread though, so now I have to make sure this works before having the lightning cable installed in the car:
On your first point, about connecting your iphone to the USB using a lightning cable. This is a known limitation of the 500. You must use their 30-pin cable with an adapter for the iphone 5+.

mine actually works real well after i did the latest firmware. the biggest problem i have withmine is the interface is by far the most confusing one ever. i like using the usb thumb drive for all my music. then i use the iphone cable for either plug charging or music play back. i don't use the bt for phone. i would tink the best combo would be the dension for media player then the bt huf for audio.
I'm picking up a pattern here...
Hmmm, seems like all the issues are coming from guys who installed it themselves. Why not pay a little extra and get the install done professionally. I had mine installed the same time as I had a passport 9500ci installed, and have had zero issues with the unit.
If it's not install error, the only other conclusion is that some units are faulty and some aren't - and that seems very unlikely, or I got the luck of the draw.
My thoughts anyway, but I could be wrong

you may have a good point... This a biased sample, though: active participants in these forums are more likely to be DIYers than the national average. The fact that the three who are complaining on this thread, vs the one who is not, does not provide enough statistical evidence to establish trends :-)
That said:
. installing an element in a MOST loop is not rocket science. The loop must close correctly, otherwise nothing works.
. Tapping into power is not rocket science: the installers seems to have gone contrary to the strong recommendations of the manufacturer (switched vs. non-switched), and it might be their own experience dealing with many poor installations at the beginning and learning from it
Do you happen to know a good installer in south Florida, for when I decide to throw out the PCM/Dension combo and replace by a decent audio system ?
