Exhaust, y-pipe, IPD plenum upgrades without ECU tune?

When I first bought my car I assumed like many that I would get an ECU flash but after several months of driving my car I don’t have the urge to do it. In fact I’m not sure it’s anything I will ever do.

That being said I would like to increase intake and exhaust flow to get the most out of the engine. So I thought about replacing the exhaust with an aftermarket unit with freer flowing cats and larger diameter pipes. Replace the Y-pipe and Plenum with the IPD units. And while I’m doing this, I’d replace the diverter valves too.

Has anyone else done this? All of these mods would net an increase from what I’ve read but would the stock ECU still be able to adjust the A/F mixture enough to compensate and not run too lean?

Stock ECU is pretty adaptive but honestly the car probably isn't going to run correctly.

ECU flash will correct this as well as add more power.

I would not bother with the y pipe, plenum or diverter valves, rather I would do those only if doing the ECU flash (and exhaust). Sounds like you should just do an exhaust and be done with it. Bigger throttle bodies, y-pipe, intake, BMC filter etc. wont do much at all on a stock car and arguably throwing money away.

My understanding is that without an ECU tune, the stock ECU will limit the torque (and thus) hp output over a certain rpm. So even if it doesn't throw a CEL (which is likely), or worse go into limp mode, you won't realize the benefits of the mods w/out the tune.

That is untrue according to IPD and their dyno to prove it.

In addition to what's in my sig I also have the IPD plenum and GT3 throttle body FWIW. I can assure you a tune+exhaust is the only way to roll on this car and then start on the other stuff.

Exactly. IPD and a few of the exhausts I've been looking at state that a tune isn't required but still yields HP/TQ gains.

My car is still under warranty and I'm not going to "chip" it until that warranty has expired.

Okay but what's that limit? I'd think it would be much higher than what an exhaust and a few intake mods would yield.

Doesn't aftermarket exhaust or IPD plenum void warranty same as tune does?
I have IPD plenum, there was very little difference after IPD plenum installation. Every company needs to sell them stuff, I think factory dyno sheets aren't very accurate
Tune is cheaper and you can easily put OEM soft back if U using OBD port chiping system.

Bolt-on's usually don't matter in my experience. ECU changes however are another matter.

I was up front with my dealer Newport Beach Bentley/Audi/Porsche and told them about my mods. The rep said to me that they are generally ok with basic bolt-ons and the GIAC tune. In terms of tunes, the rep said they were ONLY ok with the GIAC tune, however...and in fact some Porsche dealers actually sell GIAC tunes from what he said.

I don't know if all of this is accurate...maybe GIAC can comment, but it was a relief to me since I have the 6 year / 100,000 mile CPO.

Hey Longboarder,

Can you PM me your rep at Newport? I take my car there and the only mod I have is the EP1 exhaust. I have the extended warranty after my CPO ran out from Fidelity. I've been sitting on the fence for years regarding a tune, and just like the OP, have felt that a tune seems to be where the dealerships and extended warranty companies draw the line in terms of denying claims. My service rep at Newport has always generally talked me out of a tune for warranty reasons so I'm surprised about what they told you about GIAC. Thanks.

Hi Nick, I have a few friends/customers in your area. If you would like some help on getting these parts and with shipping/logistics let me know. The bottom line is that most of these parts are designed to improve your cars efficiency and performance as well as sound and resoponce. AND...They will absolutely yield more gains with a tune as well.

Anyhow it would be great to get your reviews first hand on them. Maybe after you can test a tune as well. There are many great options here and you can even swap back to factory if you needed to pretty quick and easy.

Let me know if I can help out!

Nick,

My 07 997TT was CPO, I had EP1, Softronic and BMC air filter and Champion Porsche in FL replaced my transmission under warranty (32k job) however no all the dealers are the same.
