997 C4S or 997 Turbo ?
997 C4S or 997 Turbo ?
I have been wanting to purchase a 997. Trying to decide between a C4S and a turbo. I started out thinking a C4S would be what I wanted but am now thinking maybe I should spend a little more and get the turbo. Any advice/thoughts? This would be my first p-car and used as a daily driver about 8 months of the year.
Been there, initially wanted a C4S cab ended up with a turbo S coupe! My reasons were (1) more exhilarating acceleration (once the turbos kick in, hang on), (2) much better overall performance, the turbo is basically an everyday supercar (3) maintenance costs weren't noticeably higher for a turbo based on my research (4) didn't want to be afflicted with the "upgrade" itch (many who start out with the C4S tend to continually think about making the switch) and finally, similar to#4 (5) I didn't want to long for/lust after a turbo every time I saw one on the street!
A note of caution, while I'm not familiar with your driving habits, you won't be able to truly use the power of the turbo (i.e., really open her up) on a daily basis as a DD but those time when you do (and it happens often enough), you'll appreciate having chosen the turbo! Kirkin said it best...No comparison!!

I thought someone would tell me to buy a Prius instead. Much more environmentally responsible.

I sold my lovely 4s for a turbo , the 4s sounds great and never had issues the turbo is bullet proof too yet has more common issues related to the complexity of the turbo system yet the spool sound takes you beyond imagination
My C4S is fantastic. However I am thinking of selling it and going for an American classic muscle car. Huge difference I know but love to go to classic car shows.
I came from a 996 C4S to a 997 turbo. I loved my C4S - it was a fantastic car. In my opinion, the C4S is a wonderful daily driver. The things that I miss most about my C4S are the sound of the normally aspirated engine and the uninterrupted lines of the wide body car. It has no side intakes and no rear spoiler, so you really get to see and appreciate the lines of the 911. I think the C4S is the best looking variant of the 911 from a purist's standpoint.
All that being said, the turbo is a fantastic vehicle. It comes from the factory with a very nice set of standard features, and the turbo boost is addictive. It really is an every day supercar. Turbos are a little bit more rare than other variants of the 911 and the exclusivity is nice.
You can't go wrong with either choice.

I agree with you about the styling of the C4S. It is a much cleaner look than that of the turbo. There just seems to be a big performance difference between the two and I am afraid I would regret not getting the turbo. Thanks to all for taking the time to reply.
My missus' 77 yr old cousin drives a 4S, I told him he should sell it to his daughter and get a real Porsche, but seriously the best Porker ever made for mass consumption IMHO is a 997.1 Turbo (6MT)... Mezger crushes souls and wins hearts
