Hydraulic Variocam actuators

Anybody have any issues with these? I had an unusual stumble at about 2600 RPM accelerating slowly while not on boost. Dealer pulled these and they seemed to be the issue. Car would hesitate apparently when the cams were trying to go from eco mode to performance and the actuators weren't working properly. Dealer pulled the rear bumper and the intercoolers, so it wasn't a cheap job although mine was covered under warranty. At $1000+, not sure I would have done it as it wasn't really that noticeable, but the car accelerates more smoothly now. Oddly, it really wasn't noticeable under hard acceleration under boost.

I have had similar experience. At one point after I modded the car, I just replaced them both for good measure. That was a few years ago...Over this winter I was getting a CEL, so I actually just took them out, cleaned them, swapped them (sides), and ran Seafoam in the oil for a bit, then changed the oil and it has been running like a champ ever since.

To gain access, you do have to remove a lot..Including the Intercoolers. They sit right between the last two Spark plugs towards the rear of the car. Lowering the engine a bit helps gain access also....Saves some knuckle skin

Thanks for chiming in. I wonder if this is a common issue. The issue seemed like it could be symptomatic of fouled or old plugs. Glad I didn't change them as preventative maintenance!
