The plumber said, "I know. I used to be a lawyer!"
LOL awesome!
Congrats. As a fellow broken diff victim. I can tell you that the sting of having to pay for a new one quickly goes away with each passing mile. After my first one came in wrong, the frustration basically made me happy to pay any price for a fix. So i can understand your decision to weld and just get it done with , instead of waiting and hoping for another. Was your car modded before the diff went bad? , mine has the 550 kit installed from ruf. Makes me wonder if the tune and extra hp , did damage to the diff.
Yeah it was, but I have my doubts that the tune or additional power would cause it.
Guys on here are running much more and haven't had an issue. But that said - who knows, anything is possible.
Yeah, just wanted to her done! LOL

I had the same issue on my 997.1 tt when it was with 29k miles only !!! thought of going RWD but its risky unless having LSD. so I ended up getting it replaced at the dealership for app. $6700
so my advise it just replace it, ull have 2 years warranty on it !

This is painful...
...after replacing the left front axle, the left and right seals with new ones, and changing out the diff with a used one, the exact same noise returned. It's much less audible than before replacing the parts, but it is definitely back again.
I's only audible after about an hour of driving - so the car must really get warmed up, and only at slow speeds, 15 to 20 kph on uneven road. As you can see I have the clutch depressed to ensure it's not any transmission noises. When it's cold, there's no noise what so ever.
Initially the mechanic pointed to the diff as being the problem, saying my original had a bit of play in it. How probable is it that another used diff has exactly the same issue - very little. So guessing it's something else.
I'm going to throw this out to the internet, does any one have a clue what could be causing this noise?
it's that clan-clang type noise:

Damper internals.
The past 2 years I had that noise and it was getting worse and worse especially with heat. In the end it would just make the noise as soon as I pulled off.
To try and fix the problem I changed all the RSS LCA bearings, I put a new AWD diff, new front tuning forks, checked my floating discs etc etc but the noise improved as the stuff did need changing but the one in your vid remained.
It was my Bilstein shocks the front left damper.
The internal bearing was gone. Bilstein rebuilt both front shocks for me and put 3 bearings n each this time to spread the load.
Good news is it's fixed and drives nice and smooth.
Hope this helps.

Used to have same noises but it was louder, and yes once the car is warmed up it starts.
Very loud clicking noises coming through out the car from the behind, its like someone pushing the car! also it comes when I turn (full lock)
The technician told me that it was an issue with the AWD part which comes as a one part along with the front diff. so I replaced the whole part.
used ones were there tho, considered to order one from Germany but since it has oil inside the shipping cost was high, so the whole cost will hit almost 60% of the new one with NO WARRANTY.

Oh man. I'm running Bilsteins B16's...
I have already replaced both of them under warranty (both left and right failed due to electrical issues) a year apart, with last one replaced about two years ago.
I swear, if these crap-stein-bilsteins are the cause again I'll loose my mind!

How did you verify that they were the issue, other than guessing and sending the shocks to be repaired?
Anything I can look at /do to be absolutely sure that they are the cause?
Thanks again!
Mike

Yes I have it. The tech did say there was some "play" in it. And it has 105,000km on it. But I have it in anycase.
Thanks.
Thanks.

I heard this noise when we went for a ride a while back! Glad you got it fixed!
