When to rebulid your turbos?

Hey guys, my car is at 110,000KM. Are there any reference points to when you should rebuild your turbos?

If we're talking about the factory VTG's, they can't really be "rebuilt" to solve this. The center cartridge of the turbo is not available as a separate piece from Porsche. So pretty much, once there's too much play in the shaft, that turbo is more or less finished.

Tom, thanks as always for your awesome insight. I never realized that was the case with VTG turbos.

Yeah, it REALLY sucks too. That's why I always tell people to be SUPER careful with their intakes and always makes sure their air filters, airboxes, and anything in that area is super clear. All it takes is one small pebble getting sucked into a turbo to completely ruin it.

I was hoping by now there would be some place to source the OEM VTG turbos besides Porsche, but nothing has come up yet.

So there are no rebuilders that can just replace the worn bearings or seals? Providing all the shafts and housings are still good.

Yes, you can definitely "refresh" them, like we do when we build or 65 and 68mm upgrades. But once there's ANY issues with the cartridge, it's toast.

Hope mine hold up, the 68's mm with your IC's is the next mod, got to get ready for Texas. RS1 will be sourcing the parts and doing the install.

That's good. You had me worried there for a second.
Thanks

Tom, any insite as to what interval you would typically refresh your turbos at?!

No idea to be totally honest. We do it as part of our upgrade to the 65 or 68mm wheels, but never really as a precautionary thing.

Does your 68mm wheel fit in the OEM 997.1 turbo housing?
