Well gents, a major moment in the build. The rear decklid has gone on today and the rear of the car is complete and looks epic. Well almost complete, I am still waiting for the carbon blade for the spoiler. For now the original GT2 one has gone on.
I made a video of the installation as I did it myself. Enjoy. I will do a write up soon.

Yeah you're right they do, as do mine. Can't really see it in the photos. Also when the tailpipes were fitted they said they were marked left and right but I'm pretty sure they are on the wrong sides. I've looked at so many photos and most seem to have them the other way round. Something I keep meaning to swap over. The angle of the tailpipes might not be as much as it should be as well. But it's pretty good in the metal.
Oh yes defo want but unfortunately I do not get everything I want lol - I think I priced this up for GT2 bits on teile.com as you suggested so no new rear lights and need for CF front end like GT2 RS and it was still something like £35k - £45k just for parts as I needed CF brakes
Honestly its looking 10/10 already and thats without the CF front end. Well done looks mad!

The surrounds are OEM but I bought the rear bumper with them as one item. Got a great deal on them. £2200 all in, all new as well.
PART 9: Batwing!
The wing or GT2RS deck-lid has been a long time coming. It has always been a divisive issue for me as well. Such an expensive item and apparently nobody anywhere makes a copy good enough to satisfy me. I had always wanted the rear wing but it always seemed out of reach. Prices from Porsche were £10,000 for the deck-lid, £3,000 for the wing and £3,500 for the blade. Then you need the loom, third brake light, fan and other ancillaries. The parts to get it fitted came to about £450. Then you needed to paint it, so not much change out of £18,000 all done. So a 2007 Boxster or a decklid! I chose the Boxster but that’s another story.
The only other options were buying a used one, but that’s like wanting to buy used Hen’s teeth. The one stop shop Teile.com never disappoint if you want rare parts, however even a used one from them with carbon wing would cost you about £8,500. Then in November last year one came up for sale on Ebay. It was in the US at LA Dismantler. I made a cheeky offer but they politely declined. The search it seemed would continue. Then I saw a copy selling on ebay.de but made from Carbon Fibre. The photos looked good so I made contact and asked many questions and asked for photos. After deliberating for a long time I decided to take a chance. When it arrived it wasn’t anything like the one in the photos. It looked much cheaper and overall I just thought it was junk. When I turned it over I discovered the engine lid was for a Carrera. So not only was it poor quality but it was the wrong part. I contacted Air Cooled Classics and they were very good about it. They were having them made by a subcontractor and understood it was their reputation on the line. He arranged to have to returned to him and he promised the next one he would inspect personally and make sure it was right. However after I returned it I decided to cancel the order. It may have been better second time round but I just felt that even if it had not had the issues it did, the rest of it was not to my standards anyway.
Injured wing

So a few weeks after I went back to work I noticed the OEM Wing on ebay.com was still available being sold by LA Dismantler. It had been on there for about three months now. I made another offer, which was lower than my previous one. He came back to me and said that if I offered the original offer I’d made a few months earlier he would accept it. This would also include shipping to the UK. So the deal was done and the wing was in the bag (or big box as the case would be.) I’d have to wait almost 8 weeks to see it though as I’d only recently returned to work.
Jump forward to the end of February, back home. The wing was unpacked and examined. It came with everything other than the fan and a couple of plastic bungs. And after getting prices I realised it was the same fan as on the Turbo decklid so I wouldn’t need to go and order that part (for a change).
I made contact with Road & Race whilst I was still at sea and spoke to John Broadshaw who is the MD. He is a nice bloke and always gets back to me promptly with information. I explained the conversion on my car and asked for a paint job quote. He said they’d need to see the decklid before they could quote. So I quickly ran it down to their premises (on the passenger seat of my Boxster!) The quote to prep (which included some small repairs due to light damage) and paint would be £680 +VAT, a fair price for a top job I think. I left it with them and a week or so later I got the call it was ready for collection.
In the meantime I had arranged to have the blade on the wing sorted by DB-Carbon in Germany, my go to guys for all things carbon. It turns out the blade on the GT2 is actually carbon that has been painted matte black. They call it ‘motorsport’ carbon, which means it’s not really good enough to finish as bare carbon. However it can be stripped down and finished somehow. I had arranged to do this, until I discovered the blade on the GT2RS was not only finished in carbon but also has a curve in it to make its shape more severe. Once I knew this I had to have one. However like I said a carbon blade from Porsche retails at £3,500. So the search began. I found a company in the UK called NightRacer.com in Milton Keynes produces one. (original name for the TV show, Night Rider) They boast it is made in the same way as the original ‘Pre Preg’ and they promise it to be a ‘perfect fit’; and the cost - £450, so this was duly ordered. I'm currently still waiting for this to arrive.

When I collected the deck-lid it was clearly a very good job; they are after all the go to people for Porsche Wilmslow and Porsche Bolton. I squeezed it back into my Boxster with plenty of bubble wrap protecting it and took it home. I immediately started to prepare it for installation. At this point I discovered some overspray had got inside the deck-lid and covered an original sticker that showed the part number from Porsche. I small thing I know but I like things to be just right. And it was one of the things I liked about buying an original one. I contacted John and Road & race and explained the situation. It also seemed the paint had been covered in lacquer so I was unable to remove it. After showing the issue to Road & Race they said when the car is returned for the front end job, they will paint over this with a colour matching the underside and they are also looking for a replacement sticker. And suggested maybe even having a copy produced if they can’t get an original. Can’t get fairer than that I think.
Ready to collect

Removing the old deck-lid seemed an easy enough job. Only four bolts hold it in place and one loom connector. What could possibly go wrong as some old bloke once said on TV? Well, it turns out that connector was held on with some sort of nuclear strength muscle. I spent an hour trying to get it off and I broke the clip in the end. In the video I made you can see in the time-lapse video me trying to get it off. I tuned off the came at 25 minutes!

One thing you need to remember is disabling the ‘active spoiler’ is required in PIWIS or in my case Durametric. This was again easy enough. Failing to do this would result in a light on your dash when hitting 75mph.
Driving the car the first day was quite an experience. Until now I have always been underwhelmed by the looks of my Turbo. I would see all the GT models and then look at mine and couldn’t help being disappointed. Even with all the mods on my car I still felt the same way that is, until now. As soon as I closed the lid the first time I couldn’t help but smile. The car is finally starting to get the look I have wanted for so long. From the rear now the car effectively looks identical to a GT2RS. It has quite a road presence now. I got lots of looks on the motorway driving to Road & Race. And looking out of the rear window and now seeing that huge wing puts a huge grin on my face.

I already have a buyer for my old decklid. I did however remove the turbo badge, to keep as a memento. Maybe I’ll stick it on my Boxster?
