997 Turbo reliability / VGT turbos

I'm looking at a 2007 997 Turbo Tip and wondering about reliability compared to the 996 turbo. I know the 997 has more electronics and is more complex and just wondering what to expect. Also has there been any problems with the new Variable vane turbos ? Could you do a mild ECU flash/remap with the 997 Turbo without any expected problems. I would maybe do the reflash and an exhaust and that would be it. I do not do any track or driver ed stuff. It would just be a weekend cruiser. Thanks for your response

Cars and VTGs are solid and reliable. Many flashes available and maintain reliability with most.

I have had Softronic tune on mine for a few years now, and it has been great....fast...and trouble free.

A few issues can crop up with hose fittings or the vario cam spinning....but they are pretty bulletproof other than that...

Good luck,
DC

VTGs are good. The best initial mods are a good ECU flash/tune and a good aftermarket exhaust. Many good ones available. Cobb seems to have become a very popular tune, and you will find many subjective opinions on exhaust. All improve performance, so sound and resonance seem to be the main determining factors when selecting an exhaust.

As with any performance modifications you always have the catch 22 in terms of wear/reliability. No performance modified car can ever be as reliable and have the same level of wear as a stock vehicle. One key thing to do to ensure your turbos don't fail prematurely is to double check for boost leaks as part of maintenance, say every 10k miles. Turbos can overspin due to a boost leak and that'll end their life quickly and that is what I'd recommend doing first. Boost leaks aren't uncommon at all and are really easy to check for on these cars.

Tuning wise Cobb AP is an excellent platform. It provides for really straightforward and seamless install, ease of dataloging without fiddling with a laptop in the car as well as a number of off the shelf tunes for different octane and bolton mods. It also tends to have great resale value in case you decide to move on to another car/platform and in case you're looking to customize the tuning to your mods/octane we're there to help with any tuning request/question you may have.
