I do not believe it is supposed to work that way. My key does not turn unless inserted all the way.

If you can duplicate this behavior then I would suspect your ignition switch.

my 2008 turbo does the same thing. Turn the key once and the car starts only sometimes, other times it take 2 or 3 trys to get the car to start.
It has failed me once and had to push start the car.

I replaced the battery and still the same issue.

next thing is to try the starting motor...

Same few options to look at, but like I have said, all things being equal, I would start with the starter, then ignition switch since the wiring has not reported to be a problem on these cars.

You should have no issues, it is a fairly straightforward job.

switch wasn't the culprit. I would have to look at starter now.

I just got done with the same issue on my 997.2.

Replaced the battery, then the ignition switch, and nothing.

turned out to be a relay. There are two in succession that pertain to the starter. The first got stuck in the on position and was constantly feeding power to the second, melted a couple wires, and was the culprit.

9 hours later after diagnosing and checking everything from the power in to the starter and two relays, I’m back on the road.

relays are under the passenger side dash and there is a new part number.

During this issue, did your car sometimes start and sometimes not? Or when it stopped starting, was that it until the relays were replaced?

I had a hard time starting it all of a sudden. Was able to get it going, drove it twice more and then could t get it to start under any circumstance. All over a couple hours.

Good question Ed.
onefastman1 my issue is more intermittent. unlike yours. by the way how were you able to get it going once it stopped? why you never looked at starter? just wondering.

I have a 2007TT, clutch switched replaced around 20K miles, now with 26 K miles when I turn the key I get a clicking sound. After a few tries it starts right up
Battery new
Is this the starter ?

You can eliminate the clutch switch by disconnecting the leads on the switch and jump them together with a short wire.

If that does not change the problem you have 3 possibilities:

1. Starter (specifically the solenoid on the starter)
2. Ignition Switch
3. Wiring - for a TT, the least likely issue

All other things being equal and based on my experience, I would start with the starter. About the same price, and for me at least, R&R'ing the starter is "easier".
