Keep my 997.1 or get rid of it?

Hey forum members,

So I wanted to get a feel for what other's think who perhaps have been in my situation. I have an 07 turbo tip with EP1 exhaust. Never tuned. It has close to 66K miles and I really do love the car. My fidelity extended warranty is up in April. I'm about +$8K on the warranty so it's been well worth the purchase price. Under CPO and under the extended warranty I've had all but one of the big known failures repaired (transmission gasket seal leak with a complete replacement of the transmission, coolant pipe failure, rear spoiler failure and some radiator hoses repaired). Still haven't had the dreaded cam shaft issue. I'm not sure I can get another warranty and even if I could, I'm sure it would be super expensive and probably not worth it.

By the time the warranty runs out I could probably get around $55K for my car assuming the current values hold. Not sure what to do? Keep my turbo that I love (it's plenty of power with timeless look and metzger engine) or sell it and get something else. But I don't want to spend more than $80K total on another car so I'm not sure what the options are that would give me this combo of performance, look, pedigree, prestige etc. Curious what anyone else with my first world dilemma has done? I currently only drive it on the weekends and that will likely continue and maybe even decrease. Is it crazy to keep an 11 year old Porsche for many years to come for the few times a month I take it out? How much does the cam issue cost if it does fail? How many further failures are there left I haven't thought of? Anyway, thoughts and advice much appreciated!

11 months ago I sold my 997tt...I’m currently looking for another one!! Everyone is different but unless there’s something else out there that you really want, then there’s no point to sell it, Especially since you got the big repairs out of the way! Is the transmission issue common for the tiptronics?

I guess the same failures can happen again, e.g. the wing, if you replaced with another stock unit (as opposed to, say, the Rennkit unit). But if the repairs were done fairly recently, then I'd think you would be safe for a long time, particularly if you won't be driving it very much. What can you get for $80K? If it's a newer car, it won't be as raw and special. If it's an older exotic, you will be facing the same potential massive repair bills. Or you can just sell and keep the cash and wait till you expect to be driving regularly again. but you may not be able to get the same car you love. so if you can afford to let it sit, why not just keep it.

I’d keep the one you know. The cost of moving to a new car is greater than that of the possible major repair (that’s unlikely to happen).

Thanks fellas for the responses. Yeah the more I think about it, given the decreased driving I'm going to be doing, and the fact that the car still moves me, I'm just gonna keep it and mentally prepare for $5K a year worth of repairs. If it happens I'll be ready, if not, icing on the cake haha. Thanks and enjoy your rides!

It won't be $5k a year in repairs now that you have the big ones out of the way. I think an average of $2k a year if you are driving 5k miles is pretty realistic. I spent $6k on the cam sleeve failure in Dec of '15 and since then I've spent $250 twice for oil changes...that's it. It comes in spurts

Yeah, I'd venture to say that if you're spending $5k each and every year you have bad luck or put a lot of miles or track time on it.

Thanks that's good to know! I've always wondered how much that cam sleeve failure would cost. I can stomach setting aside a couple grand a year for repairs.
