California now requires stock ECU tune to pass SMOG
California now requires stock ECU tune to pass SMOG
I was really surprised to read this today. It's one thing if you only have a tune, but if your tune is necessary to support mods like bigger injectors and turbos, mafless, etc. it isn't so easy to flash back and forth between stock and custom ECU maps. I remember having to put my stock exhaust back on every 2 years and I thought that was a pain. Re-installing stock injectors/turbos/exhaust/tune so your car will run right with the stock tune is a huge ordeal. I live in Florida now so we don't even have smog checks
but I feel for those in CA. I know the environment is going to $h!t and it is causing severe problems for the state but this isn't going to fix it.

The funny thing is I never saw anyone "coal rolling" or doing any of the stupid $h!t that this law is supposed to help prevent the entire time I lived in California from 1985 until 2018. In Florida I choke on a cloud of black diesel particulates from some d-bag in a lifted F250 just about every time I go for a drive with my mother in her Tesla. I do not get the mentality of purposely spewing garbage into the air to somehow teach people who want to drive electric cars a lesson. I researched this law more after making the OP and it was not meant to target performance tuners but they get caught in the wide net cast by this law's provisions. I just hope this is not adopted in other states.
Thankfully not my case. My 997.1 Turbo has GIAC ECU tune and Cargraphic Exhaust (200 cell cat versus stock 600) and passed the test at a so-called STAR station in Los Angeles a couple of weeks ago. The car was hooked up to a computer during testing.
I've had the car since new (now 12 years) and has never had any problem passing. I recall they've had censor at the exhaust tip also.

Gee, you don’t think they would lie about something like that do you?
I think the older cars 996-997 don’t keep that info in their dme. Believe the newer cars do.

with larger injectors you cant go back to oem tune.. car will run very rich...
Thus most of my clients do not upgrade injectors since they are good for 700 whp with the 2 oem pumps

I just had to drop my motor to remove my injectors so I could get smogged. What a hassle. What are you doing to get those numbers without larger injectors? Bigger turbos?
The 997T has 60lb injectors stock which are fine for 700whp. I'm getting that with my car using VTG's with TiAL 68mm internals and supporting mods. The 996T was more limited because it had smaller injectors. Unless you're running ethanol or making more power than the stock rods can handle you shouldn't need bigger injectors.
