997TT vs SL55 K2

I was expecting the SL to murder the 997TT because it has about the same hp/tq at the wheels as the 997TT has at the crank. Not so. After 3-4 rolling starts from 50-65, the best I can say is that it depends a lot on speed/rpm of the 997TT at launch. The SL would get the jump if the 997TT was in the wrong gear. On our last pull I was in third at about 3200 rpm and the turbo jumped a nose ahead of the SL and was maybe pulling away at a turtles pace, maybe. The SL clearly trounced the turbo in the sound department. My friend did a fly by and all I can say is WOW! A fly by in the turbo sounds more like a VW on steriods.

I think that just goes to show how incredible the power of the 997TT is! About the exhaust note, i agree it could be better, but no stock benz sounds good to me, but then again yours is not stock. i dont think the 997TT sounds like a 'vw on steriods" at all. the 997S and especially the 997 GT3 have some of the best exhaust notes and sound MUCH MUCH better than any benz ive ever heard hands down.

Are we talking sl 55 amg? I thought the 997tt would crush it. How would it fair against a sl600?

It was my SL55 with Kleeman K2 tuning. I thought for sure that it would pull away from the 997tt but it did not. I'm sure the 997tt would walk away from a stock 55 or 600.

his car is 05 SL55 K2, 585HP/628TQ! not a stock 55

I just looked at the dyno sheet from when I had the K2 done. The SL55 K2 has more hp and tq at the rear wheels than the 997tt has at the crank. Yet I still think the 997tt was inching away.

Not surpising to me. I personally do not like mercedes, the quality the offer is not nearly up to par with other German car makers. But they just odnt do anything for me with the pretty much no 6 speed manual lineup and the obese cars. yea the 997TT isnt the lightest either but loo what youre saying. the car that has more hp and tw to the wheels canot beat the car with less hp and tq at the crank than the other car has at the wheels. 997TT are just phenomenal cars.

Don't be fooled by Porsche's typically conservative hp ratings on their Turbo/GTx cars. Not to mention the perfect gearing that keeps the engine in full song (of course, with over 500 ft-lbs at a measly 1950 rpm that isn't hard to accomplish) and the small frontal area, the TT is a force to reckon with in any real world acceleration contest.

A stock SL55 is more on par with 997s ..

Guy's I've seen stock E55 run 12 flat 1/4. they are very fast and like porsche, MB is conservative. My K2 E55 dyno'd at 585 rwhp and 650 lb/ft and trapping at around 125 mph. In a drag race my 997 S would have no chance either against my stock E55 and with K2, forget it.

E55 K2 = 585RWHP??? I have to think thats a little high? Do you have a Dyno sheet to post?

I have seen a few dyno sheets for E55 K2's and they are around 440 - 470 RWHP. Are you sure you did not mean "Flywheel" HP?

We weren't talking about the e55 thought, even the e55 would smoke a sl55 in a heads up race from a dead stop or roll, 997s would def be a good race for a stock sl55, theb e55 996tt!Amg Benz's are highway monsters , but so are turbos when modded, my friends sl65 ran pretty hard against me but the thing is HEAVY!! Now that its renntech'd the thing blows my mind!

You should not discount the MB cars in a straight line. Stock, the E55 / SL55 will smoke a non-turbo 997 in any contest of acceleration -- from a standstill, a roll, etc. A well-driven or tiptronic turbo 997 will in turn beat both from a dig; from a roll, it would be a close race.

The Benz's are all *that* heavy, either -- the E55 is 4100 lbs, the SL55 is 4200, while a tiptronic 997 is 3600.
