Waiting lists and buying advice

I just called a local dealer and was told "about a year for a production slot, but I magically have one with a couple hundred miles on it, but it will be well over MSRP."

Sounded like a scam intended to scare me away from the wait list and into paying a big premium.

If I want to custom order a car, what should I realistically expect in terms of wait time? Should I put multiple deposits with multiple dealers to improve my odds of getting an earlier allocation?

Please share some tips for a first time TT buyer.

Call around, depending on where you are. There are cars available at MSRP right now, and dealers with allocations available as well.

If your willing to spend the (relatively) small amount in shipping the right way then you can get one sooner rather than later. Avoid the dealers selling over MSRP.

If you want to spec the car yourself, you'll need to secure an allocation for future production. Call as MANY dealers as you can and find out when they could offer you an allocation. Slots will come up, likely earlier than just at the end of the dealer's wait list. If you can, do the multiple deposit thing. Make it clear that you are not interested in paying over MSRP, so they won't waste their time trying to sell you a car at a premium. If you are willing to buy a car already in stock, or one that becomes available, then the price may be at "market". Your choice.

i agree with the previous comments regarding calling as many dealers as you can. for sure, you can find a dealer who has an open allocation to build within 4-6 months, and possibly even sooner. there are people who cancel. paying a dealer over msrp for a car in stock is unecessary. you will lose your market adjustment, as within 6 months, there will be no shortage of turbos around. i know that brandywine porsche in pa. has a black/black turbo available due to a cancelled order for msrp of about 137. it has pccb's-they called 20 customers, and had no takers because of the brakes. i am sure that other dealers will have similar situations. just keep calling-you should have no problem. keep away from the speculators with 100 miles on their cars wanting 10-15k over msrp. good luck.

chrisn,

I have a Feb. '07 build spot at MSRP that I will probably pass on... going to wait for PDK tranny. PM if you're interested. You'll need to pay for shipping from the Chicago suburbs.

Don't pay over MSRP. There are cars available in upcoming months at MSRP. If you're slightly flexible on options (and there aren't that many that are objectionable, IMO) then you should be able to find a car that satisfies your needs. I gave up waiting and bought a Cabriolet. I'm going to wait for a sunroofless, Turbo S, PDK, possibly GT3.

One of the sales guys at McKenna told me that hes not thrilled about it (and I did sense some sincerity too) but the prices will level out early new year.

They only charge above MSRP because suckers pay it.

as we have said, all you have to do is make some phone calls, have a bit of patience, and you can find one within 4 months or so, if not sooner, at msrp. if people want to deal with dealers that rip them off, it is their own fault.

just one more thought-if you have a signed order by that dealership, and they reneg, you can go to court and pursue legal remedies. it wouldn't be too dificult, assuming they signed a contract for a given price with you, to convince a court to make them perform. if you signed a contract and refused to buy the car, they could keep your deposit. it works both ways. if you didn't get a signed contract from them, then you screwed up. i certainly wouldn't allow them to abuse me.
