Test drove a 997 TT today

Test drove a 997 TT today. I have little experience driving a turbo with awd and I didn't know what to expect. I must say the car is so easy to drive. It had the short shifter, which is a bit notchy but the throws are short and accuarate. Throttle blipping downshift was more fluid in this car after 15 minutes than I am in C2S.

This car is very refined. I was able to pull in 2nd 3rd 4th and 5th gear and the car is very fast, but it feels a little isolated. I went from 45 to 100 mph in third gear and had no idea I was going that fast.

As for the lag, I felt a hesitation for maybe a half a second and then all hell breaks loose. With the Sport on, the car seems much quicker. It is so easy to drive fast. I need to learn how to spool up correctly.

I will be trading the C2S for one for spring delivery. Basalt was my choice, which was the car I drove, but they Arctic Silver in show room and it looked sweet. My current car is Arctic an I am looking for a change - so confusing.

OPtions:
Sport Chrono Turbo
Short Shifter
thicker steering wheel
hot seats
embossed head rests

I have heard that same thing from several mag articles as well as people who have driven it. sounds like a beast of all beasts, as it should.

Not so sure of any turbo lag on the 2007. GT Porsche mag claims none there, just a matter of learning to use the turbos. Porsche's new turbo booklet says the new turbo offers "a revolutionaryu solution to this turbo-lag dilemma. Its twin inter-cooled turbochargers feature thje application of Variable Turbine Geometry (VTG) With VTG, the exhaust flow is channeled into the turbines by way of electroncially adjustable guide vanes changing the angle of these vanes. This system can replicate advantages of a small turbo at low rpm generates max power at low rpm) and a larger turbo as the tach climbs (power at high rpm). 2007 is first time VTG used in a Porsche turbo." I haven't found a turbo to drive, all, at dealers near me, are spoken for. But I have a feeling if some minor lag seems to exist, a driver can learn in time to move the newly designed turbo system in a fashion that won't generate noticeable turbo lag.

well put, the 997TT has 'virtually' no lag, which means almost none, im sure there is a slight hint, a VERY SLIGHT hint if any at all. and like you said, a good driver will know how to learn to have no lag with proper driving.

Other than the obvious differences in HP and speed, can you talk more about the differences between the TT and your 997S? You mentioned it felt a little isolated - much more so than the S? What's the TT sound like compared to a stock S? Thanks.

997S vs TT

Biggest difference - the TT does effortlessly what you need to ring out of the 997S. The 997S sound is more "911" in my opinion, and is louder from inside the cabin. The Turbo pulls hard, but it is deceptive. I guess that what people call "refined." Going from 45 to 100 in third took about the length of 1 car and a small truck I was passing. I thought I hit maybe 75, but it was 103 mph? Again, you just don't feel it. Again, I am not an experienced turbo driver, but there was a half a sec hesitation at around 2800 rpm, but as soon as the revs built to like 3000 it was gone. I probably drove it 65% and was giggling like an idiot at the torque. The sales kept asking me what was so funny. I said, "watching your head snap back out of the corner of my eye."

Steering is very point and go - but it is a little weightier than the C2S - probably the AWD. It is really not noticeable. Sticks like glue though that's for sure. The short shifter in my opinion was very nice. Short and accurate and rev matched downshifts are practically telepathic. The clutch feels lighter in the pedal than the C2s as well.

You can sense the extra width of the car and it does feel a little heavier. Overall, it is just refined. The C2S I think with the louder exhaust, the lighter steering feel and the NA motor seems more "raw" than the Turbo - but again, you are ringing out the motor to get the best acceleration out of it, which adds to the experience, where the Turbo is just effortless in the way it builds ridiculous amounts of speed.

Great writeup/impressions and i totally agree. What im starting to realize though is, i love the "working for the power wringing out" of the M3's so much, that i would probably be madly in love with the GT3/997S, i need to go drive both. Turbo is awesome, modified even more so but just lacks the fun factor

With your current car - I think you will miss the horsepower. Sounds like a GT2 for you. I wish I could test drive a 997 GT3 but it will probably so hard to find one. You could buy my C2S

GT2 or not, i know i dont have a GT2 and dont pose like i do, but seriously i am VERY CLOSE to what a GT2 is right now, and its still not a fun car IMO unless im going all out driving 100% through twisties and so on, that['s again my opinion though! Meanwhile i just took my friends stock M3 out to Bear Mountain here in NY, and had an amazing time, so much fun!
