Cant Decide!! Please Help!!
I ordered my 997 TT with a 6-speed. It is a sports car, after all, and when the PDK comes out, the Tip equipped cars will be second best, while 6-speed cars will still have the same demand as before the "PDK Revolution." My wife doesn't drive a stick and I am not going to teach her on my 997TT.
hello
dont suppose there is any chance you still have the system and would be willing to sell it. I broke my neck 4 years ago in a motor accident and currently can only drive and automatic. this system would mean I could finally drive my RSR replica so I am really interested.

Had 6 tip turbos and 1 6 spd. Get the manual. Get the manual. Tips will be old news very soon. IMHO, buy a used 07 and wait for the 2010 PDK. Get on their list now to be first. Used 07 with under 3k miles can be bought for $100k or close.
Are you sure you want to buy a TT? If you are this indecisive and concerned about ROI, maybe it is not the car for you.
Driving a Tip at the track is not like a video game. And Tips can be very involving cars, if you set up the mods and suspension in the right way.
A 6 speed would be a great choice, and the PDK is certainly not that good IMHO. I have driven many 6 speeds, a couple of Tips, and many sequentials, and the real sequentials (even without using the clutch) are the best...Just my $0.0001...

I'll see and raise...
Using KBB as guidance or justification for configuring a P-Car is like courting Angelina Jolie because she recycles her water bottles. P-cars are about passion, not about the fiscal prudence or efficiency.
And, in that regard, Tips are just non-starters - at least for me. Yes, in recent rounds, the Tip is faster to 60 than a 6-speed. So what. It's a slushier and less directly involved ride. And it's an automatic for gods sake. How sad is that!
I'm a 6-speed fan (if that's not obvious) but could easily be swayed by the PPK. It has the direct connection of a real clutch/gearbox, shifts faster and harder than I ever could or would, and for a DD, has the luxury of an auto mode if my mobile phone rings. To be fair, I've never driven a PPK, but have driving an 430 F-1 and it was a life-changing experience.
Every time I see an ROI investment justification on a P-car, I'm tempted to recommend that you just buy a Prius. It's the price/value/cost leader.
Whew, I feel much better now. Hope I didn't offend anyone...

Those are valid points, but I don't believe KBB provides a good estimation for cost for Porsche automobiles, especially when it comes to options. While automatic transmissions for automobiles generally bring more $$ during trade in, I believe the 911 Turbo is different.
For instance...While I know that spending $5-10K for carbon fiber parts will never return when selling the car, options such as th X50 Power Package for he 996 TT certainly did. And KBB does not adjust their cost estimates to reflect this. I'm just making a guess...but when you go to a Porsche dealership and look at comparable 911 Turbos, I simply don't find and difference in price between Tips and manuals.
Just an opinion...

You make good points, and I do agree. I think you mean "PDK" transmission not "PPK" as in James Bond's signature handgun.

PDK will change everything, Especially in turbocharged cars where boost control requires "preloading." I'm not convinced it's ready to replace the manual, but it is certainly ready to replace an automatic gearbox. There will probably be a time where PDKs will out sell manuals, but for the absolute purist, a N/A engine with a manual brings you closest to nirvana.
Oooh, of course PDK. Must have been Angelina to Bond women to the Walther. Sorry

Wow...a year later and finally a response!

The 997 turbo is a great car IMHO.
Whether you get a tip or manual now, or wait for a PDK version is your choice, and the type of driving you do. Around DC, although I do drive the GT3RS sometimes for commuting, I now use a Tip TT because it is easier. However, they are both great track cars (with some mods, and understanding of suspension and physics).
Now, since we have a brain-activated controller for the manned F22 fighter jet (combination of trained EEG waves and fontalis muscle EMG control), wouldn't this make the ultimate shifter?

It really depends on your personal preference.
Do you want to drive stick and manually shift gears. How often will you be driving the car?
If you're going to drive it often, possibly TIP? But if it's going to be a garage queen, then manual.
However, manual will always have you feeling true to the car.

2 cents
My previous car was an M3 with SMG. I got this option because my wife was going to drive it as well, but later changed her mind. I did enjoy the SMG (with coil over mods, exhaust, super charger) but I never felt the "connection" I wanted and less challenging to drive on the track. My 997TT is 6 speed and I wouldn't want it any other way - but it's hard if not impossible to put into words. Maybe you could drive a tip and 6 speed from P people in your area and or dealers (sans PDK of course)? It's a tough decision - good luck.
K.
P.S. I've heard people say they wished they had ordered a 6 speed instead of a tip but not 6 speed owners wishing they had ordered a tip.

6speed of course. The PDK is going to be a while. Right now the TT has to much power to handle the new gear box. And the GT1 engine may be history. To much "new stuff" for me. Seems like something new just to boost sales. 3.4-3.8, 0-60 as someone said, how much quicker do you want. Some of these electonics take the "FEEL" out of the car. Like our Lexus it is perfect, but not the same animal. Maybe the new cars will come with a "Driver" and really be smooth. HA HA
