Took it to the Track - WOW - Fantastic Car

My wife and I just got back from the track, first day with the TT, what a great day. We have a 997TT with a couple mods, a Giac tune and a Fabspeed exhaust with headers. I never knew a car could be so fast. We are no strangers to fast cars. Our usual track car is a Lingenfelter 383 stroker, 500 hp plus many goodies or a Doug Rippie C500/RSR 500 hp which is a fully race prep car. Having driven these cars many times I figured the TT couldn’t be much faster or better.

Boy was I wrong. The TT is Stupid Fast, shoots out of the corners, unbeatable in the straights, with more grip in the turns than I thought possible. It out corners our Rippie Vet which is on full race tires. I think I probably beat my best time in the Vets this first day with the TT. I agree its easy to drive fast, but not easy to drive at the limit, at least not for me on the first day.

Fortunately I had the good sense, or fear, to ask my old instructor to go out with me on my first day with the TT. The TT is deceptively fast, he save my butt but letting me know I was entering the corners too fast, which happened on the very first corner. He encouraged me to keep flooring it out of the turns. If I do that in the Vet it kicks out the rear or worse. With the TT is just digs in and goes. It seems a little better coming out of the turns than it does in the turns, where I felt it slipping a little. But this seemed easier to feel and correct than the vets.

We have the Tiptronic. It worked perfectly, neither me or the instructor ever thought about what gear it was in, its was just there all the time.

Some of you may know my wife marysc6 from other posts. Well she is a bad influence on me. All the way to the track she kept saying go slow, just have fun, just learn the car, etc. When we got there it change to "go out there and kick ***, don’t let anyone pass you, why did you let that 700 hp monster with tires 2 feet wide pass you the first time you drove, we didn’t buy the Porsche to get passed, etc, etc.". It was like Adrian in Rocky saying "win, win". She’s wonderful.

One note of caution. One time my instructor move the gear lever to manual while we were bouncing around. Then the car was locked in one gear. I started using to toggles till we got it figured out.

I’m surprised how well the brakes held up. We were at Summit Point WV which is a killer on brakes, I didn’t feel any fade at all, but that could have been because I too busy to think about it. After driving this track hundreds of times in a Vet I have plenty of time to think and relax. Today the track was moving too fast for me to process it all.

The car was so fast it wore me out. I came in early because I couldn’t keep up with the car. I felt like you do when you first go to the track, everything moving too fast and you get dead tired. Maybe I’m not the driver I thought, but to me it was really fast.

My instructor drove it a couple times, it was as much fun to be a passenger as a driver. He made the car fly. He will probably read this so I send my thanks to him for a great day.

The TT seems to thrive at the track, it felt stronger on the way home. Now I have a totally different impression of the car, it’s a race car with everything else like a luxury car. Now I just have to convince my wife to take it to the track again.

Great write up. Good to see people enjoying their p-cars at the track.

Nice writeup, jives with my impressions as well. Car is scary fast, but rock solid and planted, esp in sport mode. Love when a neophyte drives one fast and thinks it's unsteady at speed. Porsche made it really rwd biased and did a nice job on the sport mode suspension as well, akin to my old x73 setup. I was cranking out 2:teens at the glen a couple of weeks ago on street tires, amazing.

Brakes are stock. They stopped great, but I'd still like a harder peddle. Does the tt have steel brake lines? But it seems to me Porsche has somehow programmed a soft sinking peddle, as in my previous posts. I got in a brand new tt and it was the same.

Before going to the track the soft peddle made me not trust the brakes. Now I trust them.

Dear TT surgeon. I don't understand your comment, "love it when a neophyte finds it unsteady at speed".

No man, not you! Referring to guys who complain about how bad the car handles at speed who have never been near a track in their lives.
Anybody with track experience (you, me, eclou, ttgasman, for ex) seem to all agree that the car does pretty damn good out of the box! Sorry if I phrased my comments poorly, late, a couple of beers, you know...
