EVO 600 at the strip, interesting results
I took the car to San Antonio Race way last night. The car is a 997 TT TIP with the EVO 600 kit installed. This includes EVO headers, cats, exhaust and tuning.
My first run was a 12.06 with a trap of 117. The 60 ft time was 1.98. this was truly my first run ever down a strip, if you have never tried it I highly recommend it
I ran it 5 times with a best run of 11.8 at 117 with a 60 foot time of 1.84.
The TIP is a tricky beast to master and I never felt like I got a good launch. Almost every car that I came up against took me off the line and most of them I was past by half way down the track. Not what I expected.
The track hand at the staging lights was trying to get me to do a burnout but it proved difficult. I stood on the brake gave it some gas and slowly let out the brake.. The car started to spin all four tires and I had to back off immediately. I never even spun the tires on launch so I guess it did not matter.
I tried to launch using the following technique:
1. PSM off
2. Sport mode on
3. PASM off
4. Hold the brake
5. Apply some throttle to build RPMS
6. Release the brake
I really don’t think this was the best way to do it because every time the car would fall on it’s face for a moment (every car took me on the hole shot) then the power would kick in and down the track I would go.
According to the EVO web site a car equipped like this with a manual trans should run in the low 11’s with a trap speed of 125 or so. Everything I have read states that the TIP is a faster car in both 0-60 and ¼ mile time. So what am I doing wrong???
Is it possible to get a TIP car into the 10’s?

There is absolutely no way you should get a 1.98 60' and trap 117 with 600 hp. Something is wrong with the car. San Antonio cant be that high in elevation which is the only thing that would cause slow trap speeds like that.
I'd give evo a call, something isnt right.

Something must be wrong, the times are not even what a stock car is capable of.
I still think it's the launch.. What would a good 60ft time be?
The track is at 600FT elevation. The temp was in the 78-80 range.
C & D tested a stock tip, running 11.6 at 122. I can't understand why this car would be slower.

I live in San Antonio and would love to do a couple of runs with you.
I have never been to the strip.
I have a manual, Fabspeed exhaust and headers with GIAC.
PM me if interested.
I'll probably head over to the strip anyway sometime. Thanks for the tip.

I agree something is off. My sl65 at our track which is at 5500ft and runs a DA of 8500-8800ft has run a 12.1 @119 with a 1.98 60ft. As far as the tune goes, any tune can be messed up. I had a very well know company tune my car and ended up losing 40whp from the tune. The company always blamed the dyno, the car etc but in the end I pulled the tune and all is well and my power is back. Get the car checked out. What was the DA the day/night you ran? It shouldnt matter at 600ft even with bad weather you would still be in the 2000ft range I would think.

At 600 ft and 80*, your car should trap about 10 MPH higher (about 124-127)
THAT'S A LOT!!!!! CALL EVO ASAP.
You should ask Todd. He was at a GTG this am and said his 997TT was running 10.8 at 131. He has a manual and his airbox has a 700 on it instead of 600 but might be able to give you some hints himself or from other owners' experiences.
Magazines are usually wrong as I have seen a couple of 997's in person that only ran low 12's at about 116 . I don't know what trans that they had but your car probably is not as far off as some members here on the site are thinking. I race a lot and most guys don't match the times the magazines run, though you might have some tuning issues although it sounds more like launch issue to me. I don't know about the 997 but the tip 996 is a pig on a drag strip because of its torque converter. Maybe there is some programming for the transmission that evo overlooked?
