Hi Brian,

congratulations on a fantastic looking job.

I was sitting in my car today thinking about the locations of the GPS antenna. Would it make much difference if you moved it left of centre so thats its behind the instrument binnacle, thus not seen by the driver ?.

Just a thought.

Rgds.

Exclamation Do NOT obstruct the radar reciever!!!

Again I really suggest you listen to me and mount the radar reciever heads in the center grill NOT BEHIND THE HEADLIGHT!!!!!

Please don't listen to the people at escort saying that you can hide the head behind a body panel or headlight. Installers like to think they are doing the right thing by listening to escort but Escort consistently provides wrong information on how you can install their products as they don't test installs to come up with the perfect mounting solution
-------------------------------------------------------------
We are discussing this installation over at RadarDetector.net(link) and everyone is at an installer putting the radar reciever by the headlight.

What is quoted below is from a 9500ci user that noticed the performance of the 9500ci wasn't that good when mounted behind his plastic mesh grill so he changed his install and now his 9500ci is finally alerting earlier than V1 which he has mounted by his rear view mirror

Then I moved it here and performance is now incredible!

Also at RadarDetector.net you will see one member who is a true custom installer. Just look at the guage cluster of his GTO (link to picture)

Nice job

I had the same unit professionally installed last June and am very happy with it. Make sure you register the unit and get set up for the regular (weekly now) updates (you may have to purchase a 3 year update package - I think it's about $30, or sometimes it's included in your purchase.

If you need any tips how to upgrade the software in your unit let me know.

Thanks for the input on radar placement. We have not had issues where clients have mentioned range problems etc... It is not a big deal to move and will make adjustments when she gets taken apart for the A/V System.

I appreciate this thread going to the radar forums and for their input.

Well in your business its all what the customer wants...But just tell them that there radar detection will be drastically improved if moved.

As far as detection goes the Escort 9500ci mounted with a clear and open view of the road ahead has dethroned the V1 in best detection category

That's a strong statement, and the V-1 fans won't take it laying down. I believe you, and I've read a lot of posts at www.radardetector.net and have seen that many people have experienced better performance than with the 9500 than with their V-1.

The V-1 is an outstanding detector and it's been king of the mountain for many years in regard to sensitivity. Saying that the 9500ci is more sensitive is a strong testimonial to it's abilities. That's why I've bought one. I will be installing it soon (as will Nick_USA). That's why we find this thread so intersting.

I'm afraid to say that I have to agree with Rob about the placement of the radar antenna. Mine is currently behind my front bumper and frankly the reception isn't the greatest. I have the V1 mounted up high on my windshield and it consistently picks up radar signals far earlier than the 9500Ci does. I've mentioned it to the folks who installed mine an they don't have an answer to that. I even talked to the folks from Escort at the SEMA last fall about that and they kept insisting that the 9500Ci/Xi was superior to the V1 in terms of reception. I guess real world experience doesn't lie, the V1 still remains superior in terms of radar receptivity.

BTW, nice install. I like the placement of the display but HATE the placement of the controls. I currently both the display and the controls placed in the small cubby directly in front of the shift ****/boot. The installer created a very OEM looking plastic trim that makes the whole thing look very slick. I wish I had a picture accessible but needless to say I'm very happy with the install. I also have the power light/alert up in the left map light. I didn't see where you guys place that? My GPS unit is also hidden under the dashboard and works great still.

Did you guy make sure that the owner is able to access the power button on top of the control unit? Access that button is needed to flash firmware upgrades.

On my 997, I put my 9500ci's GPS antenna under the A-pillar cover. It works great there and cannot be seen.

We used the ashtray for the controll area because we needed to keep the cubby hole wide open. Taking the top button into consideration, that is what the switch is for where we have it in a bypass wire config and for updates if need be the power button up top still funcions normally and the whole setup is press fit and can be taken out w/plastic pry's. We also used the overhead light for the LED.

Hi guys,

I have an update that will be followed by pics on Monday. We just did what would be considered the basic install on a Cayman S. We mounted the controller center above the cubby hole and the display on top of the steering column. Looks pretty good I think.

What about a Turbo Cab

Where would the display mount be on a Cab?
