997 now or M5?
997 now or M5?
I currently have an ’02 996 C2 which has been a great car and have been thinking about upgrading to either a 997 C4S or Turbo but with the facelift and minor changes coming up in the next year or so I feel that I should wait before buying a new one. So my BMW dealer has a loaded ’06 E60 M5, never titled that I drove today and it was a lot of fun.
The thing is the M5 is a great car but I don’t need a 4-door car, I already have the Cayenne….but if the price is right, it is hard to turn down the M5 with all it has in it but then again should I just say forget the new 997 changes and pick up one now and be done with it? The M5 would just a temporally solution until something new comes out.
Any thoughts?

M......6!
Car with a couple thousand miles should be comparable in price. And you get the weirder interior for free!
Or, I just received an email from Maserati with a $999 lease offer on a Quattroporte...obviously a totally different car, but that's a great deal.

The M5 and 997 (S or TT ) are totally different cars. They deliver performance each in their own way. I know because I own both an 06 E60 M5, a 997GT3 an Audi RS4. They are all a blast in their own way. Pure performance is the 997GT3 and a track weapon. The M5 is what I call "luxury on steroids". The RS4 is just great to toss around. The M5 is very modded making 591 rwhp. A blast to go to dinner and take another couple and show them how you can kick butt of most on the highway. So they really can not be compared, the Porsche and the M5. You have to know what you want out of it. My favorite is the GT3 of course. Good luck but great choices. GT3Ranger
997 4S or Turbo and do not look back, The 997 is the greatest Porsche design and we are not sure if the 998 would look substantialy better. As a comparison 993 vs 996, I find the 993 to be way more appealing than the 996 not that its a dissapointment however due to the Boxster similarities.
You can always go for an M5 later on and I think its at its end of the lifecylce for the current design which would be replaced within 2-3 years.

M5 and M6 are completely diferents!!!!
in the M5 you have a monster engine like in the M6 but.......you dont feel anything when you are driving it hard! is a big boat with a big engine!
is like sth is missing between you and your car....you dont feel anything!
the M6 is different.....is more sportive......
but if you are looking for a REAL sport car.....go for the 911 or a Ferrari...etc.

CURIO how goes it? That was not a typo. My E60 M5 with Supersprint headers, Evosport pulley, Schrick cams, Evosport 3.91 diff, Dinan larger 10 throttle body kit, ASR Engineering custom air intakes, Active Autowerke ECU stage II. These mods are good for 470 rwhp. Then through in the ASR Engineering custom NOS kit (150 shot) the out come is 591 rwhp and 476 ft/lbs rw torque. Pretty fast in the straight line especially high speed rolling start (50 to 190 mph). I apologize for discussing about a BMW in a Porsche forum.
FWIW: BMW performs worst in US crash test
The 2008 BMW 5-Series performed the worst in a new side-impact crash test of luxury sedans by the Insurance Institute of Highway safety. The test showed what would happen if a truck or an SUV hit the side of the sedan at 31mph.
While the air bags in the 2008 BMW 5-Series protected the head, the air bags that protect the chest and the abdomen area performed poorly. A spokesman for BMW said that while the test showed the 2008 5-Series has a strong body, dummies were injured when the car was impacted by the arm rest.
