Video mod choice for '07 997

I've just bought a 997 and looking to improve on the exhaust/tuning system. Just looked at Rennology in Oak Forest, Il. They recommend Fabspeed exhaust, cat pipe, header and powerchip tuning. It will cost me pretty 7g. What do you think?

I purchased a set of stainless headers off of ebay - $150
Took my mufflers to a muffler shop, plasma cutted them open, took some parts out and then rewelded it back together - $50
And a set of used fabspeed tips -$400

Couldn't be happier with the sound and appearance. Feels like it pulls a bit stronger in the top end too. Then again my car is in the shop for a blown motor right now....but I highly doubt the exhaust changes are the cause.

The inside of the C2 (non-S) muffler is pretty empty with the exception of a perforated wall.

Attached is a really bad MS paint drawing I did to show the internals of the muffler and what I took out of it.

The inlet pipe stops shortly after entering the muffler, and the exit pipe is setup like a funnel facing a solid wall within the muffler. Otherwise there isn't much going on inside the muffler. I put a red box around what I removed inside the box. I had the exit pipe cut back a bit and removed a solid section of wall that seperates the sound deadening chamber (which appears to be hollow) with the primary chamber.

7,000 for an exhaust system is pretty intense....For that price I would expect a full titanium system with variable sound settings. Check around on ebay. A lot of times there are used PSE (Porsche Sport Exhaust) systems on there which include new tips and mufflers.

997 exhaust

I don't know if I could be as adventurous as you are, but would you recommend just any muffler shops or one that do routinely perform Porsche tuning!

I actually had to try about 6-7 mufflers shops before I found one that had the right tools (plasma cutter) and the confidence to be able to take on the project. I took the mufflers off of the car first, which wasn't tricky to do, instead of driving the car to the shop. The place that did the work was an independent shop in the middle of a small town in Texas.

For peace of mind I purchased a used set of 997 mufflers off of ebay ($100) just incase the shop destroyed the mufflers...

When I get my car back I will take some sound clips and post them on here.

A full exhaust system, headers, catalytics & mufflers, such as AWE, will run around $4500 tops with shipping. Installation about $500. Fabspeed price should be similar. Giac reflash say $1100 at most. RSS plenum $1200 +/- installed. Should net 20-25 rear wheel horsepower. A quote of $7K is somewhat high.

Thanks for the infor, but Rennology Inc near Chicago suggested Fabspeed and said will net 64hp with complete exhaust system and powerchip upgrade. Is he realistic and is it worth almost $7k?

64hp? I highly doubt you can get that much power from exhaust system + chip. I'd say 30hp max..

Those gains sound optimistic to say the least and 7 large is a lot of money. I'd consider looking elsewhere.

If you are just wanting to change the sound, and don't mind putting down a large amount for the product, I would just take the car to the dealer and have them put the sport exhaust on. This will give you new tips, better sound, and a button inside the car to change the db level of the exhaust.

As for the 64 horsepower increase...........I think a better estimate is 10-12 hp with a full system change, which equates to about 8hp difference at the wheels.
