Question Hi-Flow Catalytic Coverter Swap

I have the stock exhaust system with PSE (997, 2006, 3.6L). The PSE stays on all the time in the open position and produces great sound; however, I would like to achieve a louder sound when the vehicle is at normal operation temperature at idle.

I need to confirm if changing the OEM CATS to Fabspeed or AWE Hi-Flow Catalytic Converter will, they produce an increase in sound at normal idle. Anyone have this setup, if so, does the exhaust note seem louder at idle? Any issues with the CEL warning light?

The car with the AWE 200cpi cats will sound simply amazing with the PSE, not to mention you should see a 8-10rwhp boost. I have AWE cats and mufflers along with the X51 headers. The cats is what made the most difference in sound quality. I have had the cats on since 2200miles, the car currently has 6900 miles on the clock with no CEL's. FVD now has software that can adjust the parameter when a CEL will be kicked off by high flow cats...If I would have known this I would have gone with 100cpi cats.

It's too much science for me but a lot depends on the contact area of the cats. I have 100 cell cats on a Europipe system with no CEL and no programming mods - the contact area of the 100 cell Europipe cats is the same as the contact area of the 600 cell stock cats.

Thanks for providing the third option, "Europipe" and the fact that they carry the 100 cell cats with no CEL issues.

That is true..that's how Europipe is able to get away with the 100 cpi cats. The price of the Europipe exhaust was cost prohibitive for me (I am cheap). The money I saved by not going with Europipe will be able to buy software, I do consider them probably the best out there though. The FVD software I found very interesting for the adjustments that can be made.

Thanks for the info on FVD - is the software loadable through the OBD port or do you have to flash the ECU by removing it? What other parameters are user programmable? Thanks.

It is loadable through the OBD port if you have a laptop. The software can even tune for cams when they come available from Schrick in the near future.

It is best to check with FVD's website, heck here is the link..http://shop.fvd.de/?VID=447672&VCD=4...Body=&CarYear=

I have had the complete AWE system on for over 17,000 miles now. No problems, great performance & I would buy it again. There will be little gain from using a 100 cell cat versus a 200 cell cat, not worth the chance of trouble lights. Check with the manufacturer of the catalytics for proper fit with the PSE. The stock 997S headers should be changed out for aftermarket or X-51.

I agree, in my opinion the OEM header on the 997”S” are deficient in airflow. I have the 3.6L so the headers really do not require replacement.

However, could the X-51 header bolt onto the 3.6L engine, or is this header strictly for the 3.8L engine?

According to Europipe thier sport cats won't fit my 3.6L engine because the diameter and the position of thier tubes are different compared to the 997 3.8L.
The stock 997 or 997S exhaust uses two pairs of 400 cell cats and replacing these with big size high quality 100 cell sport cats is the way to go.

400 cells = 400 cpsi = 400 cells per square inch = 20 x 20 cells
100 cells = 10 x 10 cells per square inch = less backpressure = good

Checkout the 400cell against the 100cell. It seems that the cats are a choke point for the exhaust system using the OEM cats.

I'm sure X51 headers will bolt up fine to both the engine and CAT(s) in you 3.6L 997. I'm not too sure that you'll acheive your 'noise' requirement w/ the addition of headers.

If you want to make real noise why not just use straight thru's in place of the CATS or better yet eliminate both (muffler & CAT). (lol)

My 997S has X51 headers & PSE. At idle it sounds great (nice rumble).

Good luck on your 'noise' quest!

IMO the headers on the 3.6L do not require replacement. However, the OEM cats compromises airflow compared with many aftermarket cats. Much has to do with the cell count and manufacturing materials. Obviously, there is definite room for improvement gains by replacing the cats. I have not decided which cats to purchase yet, but I am leaning toward AWE Sport Hi-Flow cats due to member comments on this forum and rennlist.

AWE uses a very high quality 200cpi HJS cat you won't be disappointed.

Im running Tubi manifolds, AWE cats and Tubi mufflers, its really loud at full throttle. Lovely sound though, super aggressive. The cats about doubled the volume, while the headers removed alot of rasp and sweetened the sound up considerably.
Not cheap though.
