Bad News
Members,
Let me be the first to confirm that RMS exist in late model 2006's
. Not only does the oil leaks continue, my tech indicated to me that I had the "new" replacement seal. So, needless to say, I was not a happy owner.
FYI, 18,000 miles, no track time, mostly highway cruising. Un fortunately, the problem continues and yours can be next. Sorry for the bad news on later model with the new seal news.

From what I have read RMS exists but the number of cases decreases every model year as Porsche seems to be striving towards reducing this problem.
On a personal note-- I had the RMS issue in my 2002 car . It was the only car out of my seven Porsches which had it. The seal was fixed under warranty , I was placed in a loaner, and the problem did not resurface .
The key issue with RMS is warranty as it's the car which goes off warranty and faces this type of problem which can incur a large repair expense .
Your car has warranty --this too shall pass .

seriously, this is simply out of control. Porsche needs to cover RMS issues for a lot longer than the current warranty term. Its an obvious design flaw amd good reason 996's can be had for pennies on the dollar due to the russian roulette RMS potential.
Have to hand it to BMW, on my S54 powered M Coupe, which tended to grenade engines every now and then, they kicked down a 100k mile coverage on the problematic parts on the model years that it effected. Now THAT made it comfortable to enjoy the car for many years after the basic warranty expired.

My 2005 w/ 13K miles had the seal replaced just abount a month ago as a result of oil drops in my garage. It's going back to the dealer on Monday to evidently 'redo it' it since I'm getting dropplets of oil once again.
I've got about 6 months of warranty left so I'm at a decision point as to sell, trade-in or keep. I was planning on keeping it for a few more years since I still love the car.
The oil leak doesn't affect (I'm lead to believe) reliability or performance but it's absolutely unthinkable for a $100K vehicle to exhibit this type of 'no-fix' problem.
I doubt if Porsche will 'do the right thing' and confess to this design problem. I had the same problem on my old 986 Boxster S.

It seems the logical thing fro Porsche to do is to annouce this problem as a recall. This way the owners can enjoy the vehicle with or without the term of the warranty. STEP UP PORSCHE and do the right thing for us customers!!!!
Guys,, why all the hype and doom and gloom??
RMS is an oil leak at the rear main seal...
Huge expense??? If it is leaking really bad address it otherwise replace it when your car needs a clutch. The seal itself is under $20...the labor is the same as taking the trans off for a normal clutch job.
What am I missing here?

Since dealers simply pass through the 'standard' costs to PCNA I suspect they might take shortcuts to make the warranty repair (more) profitable to them. Yeah I know . . . . . I'm cynical in nature.
