AWE cats
AWE cats
Anyone running AWE 200 cell cats on otherwise stock exhaust system (997S)? Just curious as to sound and power dif with just the cats, stock headers and cans.
My car goes in tomorrow to have the Evo Mufflers removed and my PSE mufflers put back on. I am going to run the AWE cats, EVO headers, and intake with the PSE, my goal is to keep power up it reduce the sound. I will report back tomorrow or Friday.
I believe your car will sound louder with the PSE on.
As for power gains, the standard mufflers aren't restrictive at all - if you look at AWE's site, their mufflers add almost no power, just a different sound - so you get probably 95% of the power gains you would with their cats / mufflers. I'm guessing that would be around 16-18 BHP at the wheels - independent dyno tests on AWE and Cargraphic full systems have shown around 20-23BHP wheels with headers/cats/mufflers. This increase is really noticeable over 4000rpm. You'll also find the throttle response much improved.
I also tried this configuration with some Fabspeed headers but they removed too much mid-range torque for the tiny additional gain at the top end. The standard headers give a much better balanced power delivery. I intend to try the x-51 headers next as they are bigger diameter but don't lose torque - best of both worlds!
There's also an independent test here: http://www.europeancarweb.com/tech/e...a_s/index.html
of a 997S with full exhaust (Cargraphic in this case) where they got an additional 11BHP (wheels) by adding an IPD plenum to the Cargraphic-equipped car. +30BHP (wheels) is quite a result from aftermarket parts!

I don't have AWE mufflers I have EVO, and when it is open I hope that the sound is loud, when it is closed I hope that it is quieter to appease the people that I need to.

Thanks UK1, just the info I was interested in. Do you think the exhaust note with this configuration is good or is it too loud or raspy? What I'm looking for is not too much louder than stock but a deeper note. I don't like the high raspy note, sounds too much like a small displacement buzzer.
LeNoah: check out the URL attached, you will be able to get an idea what the fab speed exhaust sounds like on a 997 S. Scroll down to the "Fabspeed 997 Maxflo Performance Mufflers" and check out the sound bites. It might be what you are looking for. Good Luck

I've not heard the Fabs on a 997S first hand so can't comment on them. Had Fabs on a 3.4 996 a few years ago and they sounded awesome.

Picked up car, the change over to the PSE made a huge difference. I will do sound checks in the next day using the same dB tests and meter.
so is it louder with PSE open ?
Me too. I have Fabspeed mufflers and they sound great but are not all that loud except at WOT they scream real nice. The Evo mufflers are Fabspeed mufflers.
Both settings of the PSE are quieter then the Evo muffler, the normal mode is very quiet compared to the full system, the sport setting is almost as loud as the Evo, especially when it hits 5-6000 RPM. The sound is totally different but sounds very nice. I will do some readings with dB meter tomorrow.
