Advice on radar detector.. what works and what to buy??
Too many speeding tickets in the last 36 months, I need some advice on what to buy and what to look for... I really don't need some super fancy $2,000 radar detectors, just something that works well so I don't get another one.
By the way, I've never gotten one in my VW bus because it only does 55mph going down hill... It's the E500 & the 997 that's killing me.. I don't know how to drive slow in those cars.
help!!!!

I hope you're prepared for the standard reply to this question from everyone.... it comes in two parts..... Part 1..... Search the threads for radar detectors (I've done this search because I am looking at buying one soon and believe me, there are many threads).... and Part 2..... Valentine 1 always seems to come out on top.... its $399 I believe, only available directly from Valentine (go to their website) I plan on ordering soon.
I hope this helps.
And take it easy on him guys... haha

WTH!!!! Try using the search button!!!! Hahaha...j/k. I agree with PorscheLVR...V1 is the most preferred choice from what I have read. I think I will be buying one to so I can use it out of the state as I live in VA the gay state and its illegal.

Valentine 1
Unfortunately if you keep getting tickets your insurance will skyrocket!
The detector may help but usually by the time it goes off the police radar has caught you as well.
Remember, 4 points and you lose your license!

I know many people here swear by the Valentine 1, but I'm quite happy with my Passport. It has saved me on numerous occasions, but I don't depend on it entirely. Nothing like keeping your eyes peeled and being aware of suspicious locations where you can't see where they may be hiding with a laser gun. The only speeding ticket I have ever got in over 40 years of driving was 3 years ago when my detector was accidentally set to mute, so I didn't hear it warning me of an approaching CHP coming from other direction. When I saw the car go by, I checked the detector and sure enough all bars were lit up.
I guess I just learned something new about this site, I had no idea you can search a subject... duhhhhh!!
Thanks for all the reply.. Thanks PorscheLVR

V1 group buy? Is there such a thing? I'm in the gay state as well and I drive like a pansy, mainly from fear of getting tickets and my license revoked. Maybe a V1 will put more hair on my chest...
+1 for the Passport, I have the SR7 with shifter, it has been in a short time, but I have already been saved once. I like it because it is hidden and it doesn't need to be removed from the car before you leave each time.
The radar is pricey but try ebay, I have seen them there for a reasonable price, btw the new version is SRX.

Radar detectors are great and I use the V1 but nothing beats using your eyes. Watch traffic and use the greater fool theory. The greater fool theory - Someone always wants to go faster let them and use them for bait.
Two other points for the Valentine: the "directional arrows" are much more helpful than you'd think if you haven't experienced them, and their upgrade (down the road, to the latest version) option is a little discussed, but very valuable, policy.
A lot of traffic enforement are using laser these days, your best defense is to run a V1 or Passport, combined with a lidatek (laser jammer). The laser jammer theoretically gives you about 5 seconds to slow your speed while it broadcasts out to cause the officer's laser to error.
I've found the real benefit with radar detection is not when they are aimed at you directly (almost too late by then) but when you get bits of their signal as they are radaring other people. It helps to learn how best to use the tool. It is certainly not a fool-proof way to avoid tickets, for that you need to keep driving your bus.
Or you could go crazy like the M5 guy and add a scanner, cb radio, and a copilot with binoculars

Couldn't agree more. Has worked for me many times.
