I have both and prefer the 997. I love the turbo power and have always been a turbo guy but the 996 line does not do it for me. The 997 is a much better car IMO. My 996TT has a few mods and is somewhere around 520 hp. Obviously much more hp than my 997 but I actually prefer to drive the 997. I love the 2 wheel drive. The turbo with all wheel drive loses something. It just does not feel as good. Drive both and see what you prefer.

I'm going to set something up with him in a week or so. We spoke on the phone briefly yesterday and I want to take it for a spin to see what its all about. I agree with many of you about the lines of the car and the interior. But if you look at just about everyone on either renns list or this list, its almost impossible to own one of these cars without modding it in some way or another. And I think you have more options at your disposal when you factor in the performance potential on tap with the Turbo motor. Small changes make a big difference with turbo's. Can anyone comment on how a 996 handles and rides compared to a 997?

The Turbo has torque baby something the 997S nor the GT3 has.If the car is straight, all original, perfect and the deal is right I'd do it.

There are Pro and Con -

The Positive -
1)Bone stock the 996tt is faster
2) The 996tt can be modified heavily and HP can grow immensely
3) Dry Sump engine Vs wet sump of the C2S

The Negative -
1) Interior of 996tt is deplroable . I had two 996's in my past and never liked the flimsy controls and poor leather quality of the seats .
2) Xenon lights are a severe theft item . I had mone torn off my 02 996 in minutes and I can post articles of how rampant it was in this area at that time. From 2004 --
http://www.search-autoparts.com/sear....jsp?id=109550
3) Your C2S has warranty
4) Structural Build of the 997 model line is superior
5) Turbo Lag of 996tt . Off the line with no mods on both the 997S may pull ahead before the Turbo spool on the 996tt .

The Verdict -- Keep the 997S .

Have had 2 turbos in the past year, i bought an 03 X50 around Oct. and went with a cab at the end of january ... i would never have though of going from a 996TT to a standard 997 911 be it an S or not... its a downgrade and anyone can argue all you want.. that seems to be a big issue in this discussion, the 996TT is still cream of the crop when compared against the standard 997 911's

an e46 M3 is still better then a e90 335i... that equation works all over

I raced a 997S a few months back and it was a walk in the park, pulled and pulled and pulled - not to mention that the 4 wheel drive of the turbo makes the handling second to none and the turbo lag for 1.5k RPM... not THAT bad

the 997S is A LOT slower then a turbo... period - the 997S wont compete at any speed, stock for stock add any simple mod to the turbo... and its more over then it was to begin with... someone mentioned that the 997S may pull ahead till the turbo spolls... so the 997S is ahead till 25mph... whopdedo! And then you turbo will keep getting further and further ahead...

I dunno how this is even an issue

+1 agree. A turbo is a TURBO! Legendary engine and 4wd handling. Performance wise, it will walk a 997S (from my experience).

That being said, i'd still rather have a 997 anything (base Carrera, S, Targa, etc.)... I really like my interior and exterior styling. When the 997TT's get cheaper, I'll be buying one. Til then, I'll be enjoying my S.

When I test drove the 997tt (current car) stock I knew it had to be modified because the previous 997s which was modded would have jumped it on first gear . One can not dispute the power but also can not dispute the Turbo lag on the 996tt.

In both of these clips the 996tt WINS but in both (rolling start mind you notice the jump deficit ). If you don't think he will notice the lag in stock form from a standstill then please exlain .

In my post I did make it very clear that the 996tt was faster and with mods it can run well but if he thinks that he will notice it more than the interior in daily traffic then that's up to him.

I suppose the guy who is willing to swap his car has lost his mind ?
I suppose all those who opt to buy the 997S new and pay more are missing out ?

I disagree,

I have a 997tt and would take the 997S over the 996tt . Speed is only one factor and with any car even his first post evaluated other factors being equal (like mileage/options/color) . In my opinion a comparison ought to include all of the points .

Everyone Knows When You Race A Turbo Car You Need To Pre Boost Before Take Off... So With that Said.. No I Dont See Why He Should Have An Issue With Turbo Lag...

AS FAR AS LOOKS GO... I AGREE WITH THE 997 FTW....
HOWEVER IF HE CAN LOOK PAST THE INTERIOR.... HE WILL NOT LOOK BACK.. HANDS DOWN...
