Negotiating on an ordered car?
Negotiating on an ordered car?
I have $5k down on my ordered 5/27 build. I'm getting $5k off MSRP ($109k), which I thought was decent on an ordered car but now realize it may not be. I hate to be the guy who backs out on an order, but as I changed my options the car should have fairly broad appeal and the dealer shouldn't have a problem moving it. I know my bargaining power now is about nil, and the dealer doesn't believe people are getting 10%+ off of MSRP on a new C4S. Any suggestions? What type of discounts have people gotten? If I find a car on a lot now for $10k off MSRP, will I be able to back out of the order or will the dealer hose me?

The 5K deposit places you in a dilema. All the haggling in the world may only save you another 3K and then you have to face these guys when you go to service?
You signed papers and shook hands and unless they screw up the options or timeline of delivery why spoil a good thing to chase after greener pastures ?
5K off MSRP is not the best deal but not the worst either plus you are getting the exact specs that you ordered .
Conclusion -Enjoy the car.

AJag, you have been going on for months about this car and getting it to perfectly suit your desires. Now you are going to dump it for a couple grand because someone said you could do better? Come on. You got the car you wanted at a price you thought was fair. You made a deal with these guys, so stick to it. I'm sure you wouldn't like it if your new employer came back and tried to re-negotiate. Don't look back; you'll just ruin the experience. Enjoy the car.
PS - Where are people getting 10% off a C4S? Maybe a C2S if the dealer is REALLY hungry, but all-wheel drive has a much lower allocation and will typically have a smaller discount.

+1 get the car you want, it will always be on your mind if you back out and get a different one without all the options you wanted.

Buying of the Lot and getting what you want.
First of all I think that you should do the deal, 5K of on an ordered car is pretty decent and the C4S is a great car.
Here is what I did when I bought my car.
I decided to buy a new C2S Cab over the new-year (after I went shopping to replace my MB daily driver but I decided to trade in my 06 987S and spend the extra cash on something exciting rather than another dd).
I built the car I wanted on the P-Car web site with all the options I really wanted, my tastes are fairly basic, I wanted Heated Front Seats, Park Assist, Power Seats, Self Dimming Mirrors, 19 inch Sport Design Wheels, Bose, Sports Chrono Plus. The NAV I could go either way on, but now I have it I like the OEM look, I knew I was going to end up with Floor mats (LOL) and for $140 who cares.
I knew that if I ordered the car I would pay close to MSRP and that it would take a while so I made a short list of colors (I did not want a black interior) and started to scan the local dealer inventories (most even show what is coming in) and after about 6 weeks I found a car I liked.
I managed to get close to the Edmunds trade in for my car (it needed new tires, brakes (I track!) and the registration was almost out) and 9K off on the new car. It was about 6 weeks ago and Cabs were still not moving, about now they will go close to MSRP. I did not get my first choice top color but apart from that I am very happy with the car. An even bigger plus is that it will be broken in, in about 2 weeks and the weather is getting real nice in NorthernCal!

Both Stevens Creek and Fremont met that for ordered car, BUT, more than that is pushing it I think, and C4S allotments are limited.
I would not worry about a few bucks and just let the excitement build to that incredible day when the car arrives...
I have almost stopped dwelling on my stock market shoulda woulda coulda stuff.............have never regretted one moment of the Porsche experience..

Thanks for the responses, I'm just being way too wishy washy. 3-5k isn't a big deal anyhow, I think it was more that I wanted to get the price farther away from the turbo, which I had been originally considering. I think the people that are getting massive 10% discounts are, as you have said, for the C2S and not C4S, which has much smaller numbers. The wait is killing me!
This should allay your concerns. And Meteor if sooo much nicer than Arctic.

Now knowing how mercurial I am with options on an ordered car, I'm going to think twice before going that route again.
Personally i would try to get out of the deal. If you don't feel great about it it may bug you forever. I can't stand feeling like i have no leverage in a deal--best try to get deposit back and start over and do it right this time.
I changed my order 4 times
and the manager was fine with it. I'm glad it's finally getting built so I cant change anymore...getting more expensive with the wait. IMHO your build is around the corner and you'll probably love the car. It probably wouldn't hurt to try getting a few "adds" or throw ins with the final purchase but it will be your personalized car! 4S's are rare and I even pondered changing to the 4S but a 5th change would've killed the guy.
