Headers - How to improve the sound of your car!
Headers - How to improve the sound of your car!
I just wanted to report the results of a change I made to my car today.
I'm lucky insofar as I have a long-standing friend who owns one of the best Porsche independents in the North West of the UK. This allowed me to have a change made to my car this afternoon on a whim! Cheers mate! (I also introduced him to this forum this pm).
Until 3pm, UK time, I was running the car totally standard except for AWE's cats and silencers (that's real English for mufflers; totally different language this side of the pond)! Whilst it sounded good above 4000rpm and at full throttle, it was otherwise boomy, droned for England (maybe America is more appropriate given AWE's location!) and whilst it was maybe a little quicker than standard, franky, it was bloody unpleasant to live with.
What I did this afternoon was to have the standard manifolds (UK speak for headers - here we go with the language again!) replaced with a pair of Fabspeed 'headers' that I still had from a previous experiment. They were previously on my car with the stock (sorry 'standard' forgetting my Englishness) cats and a pair of Tubi silencers Great sound but zero BHP. Anyway, now they're on with the AWEs, what a night and day experience! All the droning has gone and the full-throttle sound has taken on a hard-edged, ever-so-slightly raspy, to-die-for sound! Now my car is what I wanted. Sonically, this is serious, head-turning, 'wow' stuff! There may even be just a tiny improvement in BHP - I will let you know as I get accustomed!
I'm not sure if AWE's headers (sorry 'manifolds' - proper English, Ian) are better / worse or give more BHP / less BHP than the Fabs (can't imagine there's any really huge measurable difference)! And my apologies to Todd at AWE as I was just about to pull the trigger on your headers (I'm sure you'll understand - as you don't sell 'manifolds' they wouldn't work in England)!
Anyway, I'm suddenly looking for any excuse to drive my car anywhere (and especially through tunnels) again!
In summary, headers don't make the car much louder or quieter but they make a huge qualitative difference.

I hope you are just kidding.
Just re-read my post. Yes I overdid it a bit - trying too hard to be amusing! Sorry to offend!
Anyway Dominique, what is it about living in an ex-British colony that's pissing you off so much!!!

I love British humour (to use your language) but you're not a paragon of it.
Let's burry the hatchet and keep posts on-topic.
I agree that the headers are a huge improvement, but they work very well with the cats.
I love the british terms, and this is a world wide internet forum, and you should not have to translate your terms to North American terms. Besides I am living in a former colony and I am not pissed off with the brits!
Got to go spend a penny

Sound clip or video clip?
Ian,
I really appreciate if you can make a sound clip or video clip of your new setup. I'm looking to upgrade "manifold+silencers+cat" and your sound clip may help me.
Thanks
Carlos
