997 C2S - Blew a tire and no spare tire

This is my first post on 6SO and would have preferred it to be for a less dramatic subject.

Well last weekend we did a roadtrip with 10 other cars and everything was great with beautiful roads and weather. At 20 miles before reaching the highway, I went over a rock the size of an orange. It went under my front right tire and then heard a terrific noise of the rock hitting the chassis.

I was very scared of what could the damage be and kept rolling as we were in the middle of the mountains and didnt wanna stop in the middle of nowhere. After 2-3 miles I started hearing the coins in the ashtray vibrating and was thinking that maybe the road became of a bad quality. I kept going again for 2 miles when we finally were at the entrance of a small village and decided to stop and have a look.

The rear right tire was flat and looked damaged. When I put my hand inside to check the condition of the tire, it was completely shredded. I then realised that nothing would help get the car moving and I was stuck there. I called the road assistance which took them 2 hours to get there. I will not go into how got the car on the tow truck, as it was a nightmare. The car was so low and the tow truck platform doesnt tilt.

1- I am asking myself if actually the tire had a gash when the rock hit the tire and if I stopped right away it would have been better? just a matter of using the emergency kit? or stopping wouldnt have changed anything as the tire was already badly damaged?

2- what are the options for this kind of situations when the tire is completely shredded?

3- All the tires (Michelin Pilot Sport) only have like 2,000miles on them, should I change the 2 back wheels or only the blown tire?

Please advise

Chances are you could not have saved the tire so don't beat yourself up over it. The low profile tires go flat on impact and shred almost immediately. Most important thing at this point is to check the wheel for damage. All you can do is replace the tire. At 2k, buying just one would be fine. Call me if I can help.

I have 295/30 ZR 19 Michelin Pilot Sport SP2 in the back. I guess I would have to check the local tire dealers as I am located in Casablanca - Morocco. What should I provide the store in order to get the exact same tire?

Order origional equipment Michelin in size you listed. Happened to me in NY. Left car overnight in 24 hour gas station and had car towed to dealer in AM. Porsche Emer. Road Ser. worked well. Wouldn't have been able to change tire anyway. Tire was holed and they ordered a replacement. Installed next day.

The question I am asking myself is because when I go on the michelin website, they propose different specifications: N1, REINF and none. Is it important?

Also in michelin.fr or michelin.es, they list for my car Michelin Pilot Sport and dont specify SP2. So I am wondering if that tire size exists in PS2 and non PS2?

Anything I should specify to the store?

Mich.SP2/ 295/30ZR19 N1(Porsche)100Y/XL/220AAA. Go to Tirerack.com for this information if there is still a question. The dealers know what tires come on Porsche, right. Good luck. Gerry

Thanks Gerry for the tire details. Sorry for not doing so earlier as I am spending my afternoon on the phone securing a tire!

Sorry to hear that you had to go through this ordeal. I used to have a 986 Boxster S before my current car, and it had a spare tire. I got several flat tires in the Boxster, but have yet to get one in the Carrera S.

I ended up buying a spare tire and jack; better safe then sorry. Here's a pic of another 6speeders car with the spare.

I have tried to get a list of parts for the spare tire from another thread and send these for a quote to Porsche of Fairfield. This is what I got:

996-362-020-02 Emerg tire (996)
996-722-101-00 Wheel Insert
996-721-211-00 Scissors Jack
999-571-074-30 Mounting Bolt
999-361-521-00 Tire Bolt
996-361-411-00 Belt

Store reply:
Spare tire- $893.52
Wheel insert- $73.09
Jack- $247.64
Mounting bolt- $18.61
Tire boot- $8.03 (I think you mean this # 996-361-521-00 rather than tire bolt)
Belt- $ 34.29

How does it sound to you?

You can get the spare tire from a salvage yard or ebay. I bought mine from craigslist for 60 bucks. You can also ask your local Porsche dealer's service department if they have any spares laying around. It happens

Scissor jack you can get from Kragen and it looks exactly the same. The rest looks great!
