I think the market pricing is wacky for 911s. Alot of ads for 07s are asking more than a new 08 would cost...
I agree, it is wacky. There are a lot of C2S 06's listed for $79K

Can you provide some info on the 06 C2S you were looking at?

Thanks in advance.

Regarding the M3- how about some contrast between the 997 and the M3? I test drove a new M3 a couple of weeks ago. It was black so I couldn't get 'attached' to it and the clutch seemed a bit grabby (same as the RS4 I drove recently). I can't find a DCT out here to test yet. And then there is the fact that BMW's are all over the place, and I've owned a 97' 325 (great car) and a 2001' 330i convertible.

Thanks in advance.
I've owned 2 997S cars (one was modified) amd a 997tt and had not considered the M3 at all until I drove it. Keep in mind that the car is :1) for my girlfriend , 2) she needs space, 3) she drives more miles than I , 4) likes the idea of free maintenance and 5) parks in lots where space is small.

The achilles heel of the M3 is the gearbox and clutch as you stated and it happens to be the 997S strong feature so it's very noticeable .

On the other hand the exhaust note on the M is amazing and the straight libe performance is astounding for a car which can carry four comfortably . Taking the M into the corners in sport mode is also amazing as the car has performance settings (with technology package) as well as a limited slip differential . The technology is impressive but I much prefer simplicity but she loves the ipod and nav and all the accesories .

If given the choice of a first Porsche Vs an M3 --the 997S wins for me but it did not for her specific driving needs . We opted for amanual and had even considered at one time a tiptronic but decided that traffic or not --we both want to row the gears .

Economically it's hard to justify the 25K price difference given the performance but emotionally its a buyer decision . You happen to be wedged into the pricing zone where the M3 vs the used C2S might just point at the M car .

This car was her transition from a larger 2007 Mercedes E350 into her first performance car . We both felt it was the transition before a Porsche and in our case we do have my car . Pics of my car --it's a EVT700 Hp monster http://pictures.aol.com/galleries/yrralis1

Here's also a straight line M3 Vs 997S . Now I think the M3 got a little jump and the 997S has two passengers wgere the driver was heavy set but the M3 really can move . Not like my 997tt --but can give the 997S a run .

Inventory is low . Dealerships may have cleared the lot to make room for the new car and what's left are the cars with many options . The used car market may spike a little but the first week the 09 comes out .... the used 997 cars will drop like a rock . It will only last for a short time and it will even recover .

The Porsche used market is volatile . It can decrese and increase a bit but the general trend is down . The oblective is to buy on the low and sell into the high .

Anyone considering an 09 --this is the time to sell their car .
Anyone buying --wait just a little bit ...unless you can't .

With that being said I'm not so sure I'll get 30% more enjoyment out of owning something new (08 or 09) vs. a 2006 C2S with low mileage. After all, this is my first sports car in a long time so the bar is very low and I'll be smiling ever mile regardless. I've got my local dealer checking on 2008 inventory as well as 2009 discounts. I just don't want the hassle of repair - my life is just too busy. I also found a 2006 C2S tonight with 5000 miles for $69K at a dealer. It's not a CPO but I'm offering $60K and want to see what they say. Maybe that's the best bet or wait for that 09 C2S discount next year.

My twin keeps telling me to test drive that M3 again or get a used M6... he obviously didn't get the 'right' genes.

My general price points for C2S'
2005 - $52K (less than 30k miles - gotta be CPO)
2006 - $63K (less than 20k miles - if 2 years left on warranty, skip CPO)
2007 - $70K (less than 10k miles)
2008 - $79-81K (brand new)
Curious, why ask us to help you choose beweeen the '08C2S and '09 when you can only afford the 08S and only one for about $60,000.00 max?

A good question/topic none the less...

I think he started his search with 55 in mind and then considered going as high as 80 max if it was really worth it . The two cars of an 09 base 997 and an 08 C2S would still leave him settling on passing up the 09 C2S which prices him out .

So it makes sense that he would consider the used market . also consider an M3, and wait .

I havea hunch that when the new car comes out he will really want an 09 C2S even more but at that time can still have a beautiful car 06 or 07 C2S traded in without over extending financially .

Thanks everyone.

I've decided to take my time and not let my emotions get in the way for this purchase. After much deliberation my plan is to wait a bit till 09' inventory starts to show up and hopefully I'll see that price drop in the used market as well. You guys are right in the fact that I'll be wishing I had that 09' C2S once I see it it person and drive the PDK.

In the meantime I'll keep looking over some used cars, wait till I can drive the M3 DCT and maybe hop on a killer deal if I find one. I hate buyers remorse and I think being patient for a month or two can really be advantageous this time of year.

FYI for anyone shopping for a decent/good deal (hopefully my research will benefit someone on this forum - I certainly have benefited a lot)- I found a used 06' C2S with 26K miles for $63K, about 2 years left on the warranty as well. It's fairly well equipped, 6-speed, Bose, Power and has a clean car fax. No PPI has been done but I've spent a bit of time on the phone with the dealer/seller. You can probably pick this up for even less considering it's the end of the month/quarter. I think it's a very good deal but it's missing a few things to make it just right for me (wrong color, no Sports Chrono or heated seats) .

PM me if you are interested - (Funny it's exactly in the price range I had set so it MUST be a great deal!)

after researching myself, i don't think u will find an 05' C2S with CPO for 52k or an 06' for 63k. more like +3-5k each. Even if you aren't in southern cali. but good luck.

There's a 06' C2S with 25K, clean CARFAX and two year left on warranty in SCAL right now for $63K. No CPO but looks to be a very good deal.

Silver/Black, Bose, power seats - new tires, no sports. I'm looking for something other than silver.

PM me for the dealership and sales guy. It would be nice for him the potential sale. PPI can be done for $300.

can't PM yet. sorry, i knew there was no chrono so shouldn't have asked for more info. i dont mind silver but no chrono kills it for me. it's too bad, 63k for an 06 c2s is the lowest i've seen. manual i presume?

Get the 2009. You can get the brakes calipers painted at many shops in Cali and have the look for about $400.
