2009 C or 2008 CS ??
2009 C or 2008 CS ??
Been reading this forum for a while and learned lots of info. It's all made me want that 997 even more - thanks!
I wanted to get a few opinions on the purchase of a 997 as it's time I treated myself :-). I'm in no hurry and can afford to wait if it means a substantially better deal. It will driven 2-3 days per week car and not used for commuting -at least that what I say now.
Here's what I'm looking at:
New 2008 CS from dealer stock (6 speed, white, gray, silver)
- min. of 10% off MSRP (can I get more than 10%?)
- Reasonable equipped model seems to be about $89K
$89K -10% = ~$80K
New 2009 C
- order and take delivery in Oct or so.
- Min. options (PDK, Sports Chrono plus, Ipod, self dimming mirrors, mats)
$83.6 - $2500 discount (reasonable?) = $81K
I started looking at used 997 CS' but the asking price on 07's and some 06's is mid $70's. At that price it makes no sense - am I missing something? Of course I started this journey in the mid 50's with an 05 Carrera and BOOM! it's _only_ $20K more for a new one - ha!
I can't justify the price of an 09' CS so the 09' C with more power seems perfect (Gotta get over those non-red calipers!). I hate take the deprecation hit of a new car but maybe the 09's will hold up a little better.
So my question to all you smart folks is to get your overall opinion of the 08' CS vs. 09' C regarding pricing, discounts and performance.
I like the look of both and never owned a porsche before - (drove my bothers 1985.5 944 a long time ago to FLA from NJ in 10 hours but that was in 1986.) so it'll be great no matter what.
Thanks for your input.

Go with the 09
The new base Carrera is now equipped with many S items being standard equip, plus only being down 10 hp and 7 lb ft of trq. Just make sure to get the new S rims and you're good to go

I am assuming that the options are the same, if so I would buy the C2S, the discounts will be very agreesive, and I doubt that any dealer will give a discount on a new 09.
Hp is close enough, but the S has better brakes. PDK doesn't interest me
Either way you end up with a fun car

I've already been offered more than $1500 off MSRP on 09's via the web with hardly even trying.

Ouch . This is tough . I feel that no matter what choice you'll make you will want the 09S after the novelty erodes . Both the 08 S and the 09 C2 are/will be great cars but you are going in deep .
You are spot on with price .
Why settle ? Can you wait a year to get the 09 S at a discount going into 2010?
If not --if you must have it now I would pick the 08S . I'd rather have the best of what was than the lesser of what is .
Just my 2 cents.

Thanks everyone. I gained most of my knowledge about pricing on this forum. I've already bumped up my cost from the original $55K so trying to go to a 2009 C2S is not in the cards - at least not this year.
With that being said I'm not so sure I'll get 30% more enjoyment out of owning something new (08 or 09) vs. a 2006 C2S with low mileage. After all, this is my first sports car in a long time so the bar is very low and I'll be smiling ever mile regardless. I've got my local dealer checking on 2008 inventory as well as 2009 discounts. I just don't want the hassle of repair - my life is just too busy. I also found a 2006 C2S tonight with 5000 miles for $69K at a dealer. It's not a CPO but I'm offering $60K and want to see what they say. Maybe that's the best bet or wait for that 09 C2S discount next year.
My twin keeps telling me to test drive that M3 again or get a used M6... he obviously didn't get the 'right' genes.
My general price points for C2S'
2005 - $52K (less than 30k miles - gotta be CPO)
2006 - $63K (less than 20k miles - if 2 years left on warranty, skip CPO)
2007 - $70K (less than 10k miles)
2008 - $79-81K (brand new)

You are one of the first who I give an A+ for doing price point research .
If you find a used car then some depreciation is factored in yet when the new car comes out during the first two months the old model will face a huge hit . It even will go back UP six months later. It's a short term hit and you have about a two month window.
As for the M3 . I have one sitting right next to my 997 Turbo . It's quite an impressive car in terms of driving and handling .
In my case it was directly pitted into the segment which you are looking and after driving it I found the decision was so tough . In the end space won as atwo Porsche household was a bit impractical . For awhile I seriously considered taking passengers in my third car (parking lot car) an 07 Honda Civic Si .
After two months of M3 ownership I must say it's a great car too. It's definitely worth a test drive. That costs nothing .

I think the market pricing is wacky for 911s. Alot of ads for 07s are asking more than a new 08 would cost...
Just to add my experience here...I shopped obsessively for about two months for a 06 c2s and the best price i could find for low miles with cpo was 68k. That car also had 4 brand new tires. If anyone wants info on this car, just pm me.... I thought that was a fair deal, but i ended up buying a much more expensive one (loaded c4s)

Regarding the M3- how about some contrast between the 997 and the M3? I test drove a new M3 a couple of weeks ago. It was black so I couldn't get 'attached' to it and the clutch seemed a bit grabby (same as the RS4 I drove recently). I can't find a DCT out here to test yet. And then there is the fact that BMW's are all over the place, and I've owned a 97' 325 (great car) and a 2001' 330i convertible.
Thanks in advance.
