They incorporated many changes over the previous engines in order to permanetly address some of the past issues ie RMS, also went with a very sophisticated wet sump system and threw in some other nice goodies. Porsche truly made the 09 mid cycle freshing a good one .

The new engine has a lot of great things . With launch control it ought to move off the line real fast . It looks like it is a complete new engine . I am not sure why they have three mufflers and such a cumbersome exhaust but imagine what the car can do when some tuners figure out how to lighten the load over that rear axle .

Overall I feel the new car will be an improvement .

Not so sure it is an entirely new motor

I've not seen anywhere posted that the new motor for 2009 is so substantially different that RMS will be a thing of the past.

While apparently the intermediate shaft is no longer used, we've not seen any mention of specific casting or block changes for the lower end that represent any big leaps forward. I've heard the turbo is getting more displacement and different crankshaft, but then the turbo block is different anyway.

I'm curious to get the facts on all the revisions to the new motors, other than the new fancy stuff happening in the top end (direct injection, etc)

Yup, its all new. Went from a 4 piece block to a 2 piece. Got rid of the crankcase inside the block. Got rid of the smog air pump, added an electrically controlled variable speed oil pump, add water jackets to the cylinder barrels for cooling and strength. Direct injection. All new.

Otis,

Where did you find that information on the technical differences.

No the crankcase was inside the block. That's why it was four piece - two halves holding the crankshaft bearings (aka crankcase) that were incased in two larger halves in which the barrels fit. I'm new to Porsche (if you overlook my mid 70's 911S) and I was amazed @ the pictures I saw of the motor innards.
The press release (which I downloaded from somewhere, and runs some 60 odd pages) states that the new engine has 40% fewer moving parts! Do you think there might have been some redundantcy present, if they were able to do away with damn near half the mill?

Back on topic - some thoughts

To go back to the original thread topic - picture of the new exhaust - anyone noticed Porsche is now using tubular headers? Vindication for the tuning community? Or is the new engine so different in its characterisitcs that all previous tuning 'wisdom' is now totally invalid? We shall see...

And the new main mufflers are a totally different design to the previous ones too. Look carefully and the inlet is ABOVE the outlet - so no crossover from previous tuning parts whatsoever...

God I hope this new engine doesn't have a plastic plenum!

I've never seen one 'in the metal' so I don't honestly know - it appears to be from the picture, but it could also just be that the new exhaust layout doesn't obscure it so much.

Regards
