2009 Stock Exhaust System Pic!

ARRRGH....looks like the new 2009 997 has 3 mufflers and the cats are built into the headers.

How long after the USA launch will an after market exhaust manufacture have a remedy for all this mess in the back of the car?!?!?!

Yikes!
I wonder what the reason is. Can't be weight saving.
Looks like aftermarket exhaust mods just got more expensive.

imagine how the car would sound if the exhaust was routed straight to the tips after the first, centralized muffler...

plus you'd save some weight getting rid of the other two mufflers and their necessary piping

+1 I guess this is another reason the new 997's needed extra power! Extra Weight

What is that metal cylinder after the cats in the center of the bumper?

Since the car in the pic is not an S I'm wondering if the S will have something different all together. In any event with the car (S) gaining an extra 30 hp I 'd wait to see how it sounds before I'd run out and change out the exhaust system...

I would imagine that some one will be able to make the current aftermarket mufflers work. The starting point and ending points are the same.

The reason is that they moved the cats closer to the cylinders, so the cats get up to operating temp faster. This allowed them to lose the air pump into the manifold.
My question - Not being familiar with the 3.6/3.8 variants, isn't the sump deeper on this engine than the previous?

I'm looking at the picture and trying to determine how everything flows. Headers to cats (which are totally different shape and design from 2008) then to the 3rd center muffler then to ??? I don't see how the air flows to the 1st muffler. Few basic questions:

1. Does it seem that the airflow could be drastically simplified by going from the headers to cats then to muffler?
2. What is the purpose of the 3rd center muffler?
3. What is the advantage of having the cats get up to operating temperature faster?

The exhaust seems much more complicated than previous models and I'm wondering what the rationale is behind this.

Thanks for your insight.

If you look @ the upper portion of the center muffler you can see the pipe where the exhaust exits and goes to each side muffler. It seems to me an aftermarket exhaust consisting solely of a center muffler would be an easy get, but I'm certainly no engineer.
The sooner the cats get hot, the sooner they start burning off the polluting exhaust gases.

Such a great place to minimize weight. Looks like they've missed the opportunity once again - that is a some heavy looking exhaust work.

I could picture a pipe straight from the cat to the exhaust tip!

I guess this whole new exhaust design has a lot to do with lowering emission...
