Super newbie here! hehe
What's up guys. I've been lurking the 6speedonline forums for awhile. I'm constantly on the ///M forums. I've owned numerous M's and making my way to a Porsche. I dont have a clue what models are what. I know the basics but one thing confuses me. Are the 911 and 997 the same? I've read of a narrow and wide body in these models. I really want a 997 2S in the wider body form. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
Welcome to 6speed
GT3 is narrows body, GT3RS is wide body.
Me too

Mr. B
Thanks guys for the info. I'm a real die hard M fan and I still do have my 2007 M5. I recently got rid of the E46 M3 and I need to replace it with. I'll be looking out for some used porsches and may pay a visit to my local dealer.
I was looking at M3/5 and then I tried the 2008 Porsche 911 Carrera S. As soon as I sat in the Porsche my wife said, "I could see the angels singing in your head."
You'll know it if you like it, trust me.

As stated before wide body rear wheel drive 997's are expensive models, but i say you should go for a 997s and then add some nice body parts that it will make it look really aggressive.

Hey guys, I was on the porsche website and playing with "build your own" feature. I tell you, theres a lot of options!! I felt that the sport chrono, leather seats are as must!?!? Anything else you veteran porsche enthusiasts recommend a newb?
I do plan on adding an aftermarket exhaust, wheels, brakes, suspension, bodykit...

I like the wide body but I have no need for the 4 wheel drive in So Cal.
I made the jump from an '02 M Roadster to a 997 C2S (cab) and couldn't be happier. I love the feedback and involvement I get from the porsche chassis that the BMW never supplied. It's a much more rewarding car to drive both on the street and the track.
For all the gushing over the "wide" 4 cars I really don't get it. I have to see the cars side by side and look really closely to be able to detect the difference. Seeing a car alone I totally can't tell which it is without cheating and looking at the rear badging. It's less than two inches difference (2.3%). Before you get too hung up, visit your local dealer and make sure you can even really tell the difference in person.
I think you're totally on the right track for RWD. The 997 is a perfectly well-behaved car that's pretty far removed from the tail-happy mythos of old 911s (which I think is a bit exaggerated to begin with). If you're not out slogging in slush and sleet half the year then there's virtually no reason to choose the heavier and less nimble 4WD cars. IMHO, the 4WD cars exist to satisfy Porsche marketing, not Porsche engineering.
Sport Chrono is another subject which draws out a fair bit of controversy. When I bought my 911 I thought it was a must-have option. I was mostly concerned with having the third setting for the stability management after spending five years driving my BMW where the stability management was frustratingly invasive. What I found, though, was that PSM even on the normal (non sport) mode is quite forgiving and you can still get the tail end of the car out a bit and have fun. I either run with PSM on or off and never make use of the middle setting. Beyond that, sport chrono does not add one lick of performance to the car and I certainly wouldn't buy it again. It does nothing for me and the lump on the dashboard is sort of annoying.

hey guys having driven the e46 m3 and the 911.. stock to stock i think the m3 is a monster. i esp like the smg which is jerky which to me add to the sportiness and love the blipping too..
The sound of the //m cars is intoxicating compared to the 997.
however,IMHO, the //M lacked the image the porsche exudes.. I guess the //m are only recognizable to the aficionados where the Porsche is like a universal language which is respected by most pple.
For that the Porsche gives you the ultimate experience in an everyday setting. But hey the //M is a gd sleeper to me and suitable to those who dun like to be ogled upon.
Anyway good luck on your purchase.
im not sure what to expect coming from an //M5 tho hee..
Anyway how come never consider the new DCT m3?.. but then again you have the m5 oops
