The flat bottom is the "race car" look. In the tight space of an F1 car, the flat bottom produed more leg room. Add to the fact they didn't have to turn the wheel completely for lock to lock steering, it was an obvious choice. Why anyone but a HUGE person would need one in today's vehicles is beyond me aside from looks.

This is from a company in Japan. Just dump the tip and make it all black leather.
